The converter on my '89 will lock up and unlock at various times in OD when I'm on the interstate, irritating to say the least.
I've done a search on this problem and it seems there are quite a few people who have had the same problem, but I can't find a thread where someone responded with a good solution. I unplugged the harness at the transmission so I can drive it without going insane but I'd like to fix the problem.
Connect a test light between ALDL pins A&F (upper right & upper left); when the light goes out the ECM is commanding the TCC to lockup. This will tell you if the ECM command is sporadic or if there is an issue with the TCC.
You can fab up a test light from a mini LED in series with a 1k Ohm 1/4 Watt resistor from Radio Shack.
Brain cramp, I forgot to mention I've tried a different ECM and the problem persisted. Its done it with the stock chip and with a Hypertech installed if that matters.
Check your TPS... I'm having that same issue w/ my Ram, and the test I did on my TPS showed it as putting out low voltage. Its sending a bad signal to my computer, which is then telling the tranny to unlock the coverter, but then it locks back up almost instantly. Its shows itself as a surge during steady rpm driving, especially with cruise on.

What a pain!
That's pretty much what its doing. I don't think its a converter problem as it works fine with the harness unplugged but it doesn't feel like it shifts as crisp as it does when its plugged in.
