i am driving my sons 1995 corvette while he is deployed to iraq. the engine has been stuttering. i was going to take it down to los angeles but on the way it overheated very badly. i stopped and checked the coolant but it was full. later once i got home i drove the car around to see if it would over heat again. i noticed that the fans did not come on until the gauge got well into the red. my son told me how to check the codes. this is what it displayed:
1.
C12
_ _ _
4.
_ _ _
9.
_ _ _
A.
_ _ _
1.0
but i am not sure what it means. id like to get this fixed or at least figure put what is wrong with it before he gets home. ii took it to a mechanic and he said to take it to a corvette specialist. i found a corvette mech in LA, but he wants $180 just to diagnose. can you guys help me out?
A thermostat failing in the closed position is very common. You could try changing it. Pressure cap on the rad is another. If these have not been changed in many years you could swap them out as maintenance items. I normally do not recommend swapping out parts. Systematic troubleshooting is almost always cheaper in the long run. Poke and hope can get quite expensive and eat up alot of time. Also, did the car miss and pop or just simply run hot?
the car was already stuttering, and the check engine light was coming on periodicly, but the over heating is a recent thing. no on knows what the codes mean?
