Default Removing screens on MAF

Has anyone removed the two screens on the end of the mass air flow, someone told me that this will increase the amount of air in the engine and will improve horse power. Just thought I'd ask before I do it

Won't do much for a stock engine.

Here is my take after many hours of tuning with and without the screen. It makes little if no differnce in the A/F ratio for part throttle tuning. My BLM's where identicle with and without the screen. I would need to do some testing and tuning on a dyno to see about the WOT results but I am quite confedent it will also be little if no dierence as well. In order for the theory of the MAF screen to have any effect on power it would have to be a restriction to air flow and I don't realy believe that is the case. I just stuck my Thunder racing MAF ends back on today but only for apearance sake. I few weeks back I was trying some tuning and a couple of people ststed my modifed MAF ends may be part of the problem. while in the end I don't think a modified stock MAF sensor has any benifit I don't think it rely screws anything up either. JMHO but I do hav hours of data logs but keep in mind the results sre for one car and one setup and that is it.

It helps L98s, from my own dyno results.

It hurts LT1's.

Removing the screens will add about 750CFM of airflow. You won't feel any "seat of the pants" difference in performance, but it will be there nonetheless. Keep in mind, however, that those screens are there for a purpose ie: they keep large debris out of the MAF. Those wires are so friggin tiny, and fragile, that it doesn't take very much at all to break them.

Better to say it'll result in 750 total

I agree it won't make too much noticeable difference, but if it increases air, it increases the potential for power if it's tuned

This is actualy a myth. The air filter is what keeps the debree out and at a much smaller particle level then the holes in the MAF screen. The only reason the screen is there is to straighten the airflowout so it flows across the sensor better.

Here's the numbers according to TPiS:

Stock Mass Air Flow sensor = 529cfm
Screens removed only = 711cfm
Screens and cooling fins removed = 750cfm

Ultimately, removing the screens and internal cooling fins from your MAF will provide less restriction to the incoming airflow.

Not exactly. By removing the screens and cooling fins, you'll essentially reduced one of the restrictions to airflow. But, the stock TPI throttle body/base/runners/plenum are still major restictors of that same airflow. So if there were any increase in power by doing this modification alone, it would be so marginal you wouldn't feel it. The MAF on my '89 L98 has it's screens removed, and I didn't feel any significant improvement.

The only benefit to doing this modification is that as you improve the engine's ability to take in air (ie. 58mm throttle body, large port/ported base, large-tube runners, ported plenum, SuperRam, MiniRam, etc...), there will be less restriction from the MAF. Of course, once the engine becomes capable of pulling more than 750cfm, then the MAF will become a bottleneck.

. This allows the sensor to provide a slightly more accurate reading. But the difference is REALLY REALLY small.
