Default Transporting heads????

Okay, time for another stupid question that everybody probably knows the answer to but me, How do you prepare a set of heads to be shipped to a machine shop? Do you crate them in a wooden box? Is there a crate for sale just for this? I need to get a set of heads from SC to FL via UPS or whatever. Thanks

TEA usually just shipped them in cardboard boxes. The heads were first placed in thick plastic bags which were tied off. The bags were then placed in a box with the actual mating surfaces facing each other, seperated by cardboard. The extra room in the box was then filled with packing peanuts until there was little room for them to shift around.

As far as I know none were ever damaged in transit.

Tom, are you tearing your car down or did you get a spare set to send off? Yes, well packed in a sturdy cardboard box will be fine. Wrap them well in plenty of paper and plastic so they can't move around much, keep box size to a minimum. I've got a core set of '94s right now if you don't want to tear down till the heads are ready. Just give me a set back when you're done. Let me know.

By plastic, I meant bubble wrap. I hate those blankety-blank peanuts!

I haven't started anything yet. I'm just getting my ducks in a row. Once my son is married and settled, and Andy and I are through with the auto-X year, then the surgery will begin. By the sounds of things, it looks like Andy is going to kick my butt with his 85 SM2 machine running in BSP. Whoever said life is fair? Thanks for the offer on the heads. What is the core charge on the heads from Bob's?

Dave, jerkyboy, sent heads to me. Wrapped in plastic and bubble wrap in a large cardboard box filled with peanuts. Not a nick on em when they arrived.

I guess that "new" '85 worked pretty good for him over the weekend, even with a few bugs still in it. It's really far from tweaked but the engine in it really storms. He filled me in on the weekend when he stopped by to pick up his dog. Oh by the way, did you know the event at Knights has been canceled? I guess they screwed up when scheduling it and the ball team will be playing there that weekend. Does this mean we'll see you in Sanford? That'll be my last event for this year and then surgery starts on mine too!
The last I knew the core on the LT1 heads was $200.

Thanks guys. I thought there might be some common way to wrap to avoid dings to the surfaces. I think I'll just put a stip of 1/8" rubber on the mating surfaces and wrap with bubble and peanuts. Do most guys use UPS? Thanks again.

I asked Bob at PP how he wanted me to ship them. He told me:

wipe them down to clean off any excess oil. wrap each in a plastic bag

Bubble wrap to protect the edges and mating surfaces.

card board box.

All i did was take them to Mail Boxes Etc. and told them to do this.

They were returned to me from Precision Porting in the same fashion.

I'd sandwich the heads between 3/8" plywood. Use the head bolt holes to make an "ice cream sandwich" (head being the ice cream). Make the plywood about 2"-4" larger than the heads. Then, screw some sides to the top and bottom boards. Doesn't have to be pretty...this isn't fine furniture.

Send via FedEx. (sorry mojo...)

My son is trying to get a job flying for UPS so I feel the need to support them. BTW, anybody work or fly for UPS that might give him a hand getting his foot in the door?
