Default Water pump replacement suggestions please...

I am replacing the water pump in my 93 and I just wanted some opinions, I got a water pump already and the opti spark has been replaced not to long ago but I was wondering if their is anything else I should replace or what precautions I should take I will admit I took the thermostat out to check it and I did not drain enough of the coolant out so it did spill over (alot) but I let the engine dry out for a few days and the car did start but like I said any suggestions or precautions would be appreciated

thanks for any info

The main thing is take care not to get that new opti wet. Worst case scenario is you hosed the new unit, but I doubt that's likely.

IMO, the Opti's are a lot more durable than most owner's think. The prudent thing would have been to have replaced the Opti and water pump at the same time. That way you only have to do a labor-intensive job once, not twice.

Do yourself a favor and go with te Meziere Elect. Pump. Then you can plug the Timing chain cover and avoid those dreaded Oil Leaks from the drive shaft seal......You'll Pick up 10 Horses to boot.Only a few dollars more than a stock replacement.$199.00 I believe.

I can understand how the parasitic loss of a mechanically driven water pump can be eliminated by using an electric pump on a drag car that uses no alternator, but how can such a loss be eliminated by swapping to an electric pump on a street car which runs the alternator all the time (or are we talking about using an alternator cutoff switch to gain that extra HP?).

Is the Meziere electric pump as durable as the stock mechanical unit?

TIA for any details.

Be well,

SJW

If the hoses are not fairly new, consider replacing them while you're in there with the system drained down.

Also consider a 160 degree thermostat. If you should later choose to have your ECM reprogrammed to kick the cooling fans on at lower temps (a good idea, IMHO), you'll want the 160 degree 'stat in there.

Flush the cooling system while you have it all opened up. Removing the knock sensors will allow you to drain the engine block.

Check the serpenentine belt. If it's showing signs of age, swap it.

Don't forget to bleed the air out of the cooling system when you're refilling it. Should be a bleeder screw on the thermostat housing, and one on the throttle body.

Be careful to not bump the radiator with tools or with the water pump as you remove/replace it.

Follow the instructions in the factory service manual. Torque bolts to proper settings, and use sealant as directed.

Take your time, be careful, and pay attention to what you're doing, and it'll work out fine.

Be well,

SJW
