Default buying tomrrow,

well tomorrow i am picking up a 92 black on black leather 6spd. It has 64k on it. The only problem I have found is the condensor fan is not turning on. Do the fan motors go bad, or switch? I am just wondering what the most likely cause is. The a/c doesn't blow cold at idle obviously, but gets real cold when you start getting air to the condensor. Let me know what you all think. Is there anything else I should look for that might crap out on the 92's? Thanks -Casey

PS. What's everyones standpoint about a supercharger on these?

1992... a good year... but I am rather biased.

The fan... my guess is a relay problem, but it requires a couple of simple tests, first. Make sure voltage is getting to the fan, if not, relays. If so, fan motor.

They usually get weak versus totally stopping. Mine went weak and I replaced it. Perhaps, that one has been week, and the owner never noticed until it stopped.

Supercharger? Well... the LT1 in Vettes is a 4 bolt main. You can put one on a stock motor, if you don't over do the boost. Just don't expect it to last forever.

I prefer the Hotcam/Roller rockers as a first step.

At 65k miles, it's nearing it's first optispark. You are also getting into wheel bearing replacement time. Brakes will need to be serviced, too.

Basically, the current owner is unloading it so they don't have to deal with "Maintenance Cycle 2005". A rather pricy proposition.

Read the C4 Tech FAQ at the top of the page (it's a sticky).

Mostly "give" if you are going to SC. Lots of parts and machining/labor costs for power and durability. What the heck, its only money

Default Thanks guys

Well I bought it today. Right off the bat I have noticed a few things. The passenger headlight sometimes doesn't want to flip open, and the passenger window sometimes doesnt want to roll up and down. I am still getting used to the 1st to 4th mode (which i hate). I noticed that when you accelerate hard sometimes it will buckle, like a slight hesitation. The temp gauge is reading at 230 degrees on a very hot day today..other wise in teh evening its around 210-220. Is this normal? Oh yea, I checked out the a/c fan, its def bad. it blew a fused link. I replaced it and the circuit is getting power, but the fan isnt working. But anyway, thats pretty much ALL ive noticed about the car that's wrong with it. It seems like a maintenance thing...what kind of maintenance should i be looking to do around 65k? fuel filter...plugs..? thanks for all the help- Casey

Check out the stuff Bogus listed.

You can disable the 1-4 lockout (Computer Aided Gear Selection: CAGS) by removing a plug on the transmission, but that would throw a code; several places sell a replacement plug that disables CAGS and doesn't throw the code. I think it can also be disabled in the chip. Or you can just rev higher in 1st (the 1-4 window is actually pretty narrow).

The passenger window sounds like a bad contactor.

The hesitation might be the fuel filter.

Does the 92 have an oil cooler, or is it synthetic only?

1992 won't throw a code for CAGS... so pull that damned plug!!!!

Read the C4 Tech FAQ !!!!! I cannot enforce that any firmer!

Now...

The window is a bad motor. That is a common problem.

at 65k miles, it needs a full tuneup.

NGK plugs
Taylor or MSD wires
fuel filter

Don't be surprised if the fuel pump is dying... hunks of junk...

The headlite is a DIY repair... hang tight on that one, and I will have some documents via www.c4guru.com that will help.

get under the nose and clean out the radiator intake. I will bet $$ that it's full of dirt.

A new fan motor is cheap and easy.

If the only thing it needs is the A/C fixed and lets say he wants $10,000 for the car. I'd hope you request that he take off of however much it costs to fix the A/C.

Synthetic only, no oil cooler.

Where is this plug at to disable the 1-4 shift..its very annoying! Thanks for the help so far! -Casey

fuel filter is best done by removing the fuel line from the bottom and yanking it up to the engine compartment.

the plugs can be a bitch. expect to waist half a day on them.

the harness is the big one going to the tranmission, under the car, near the shifter.

Default future mods

well i wanted to put a supercharger on it but its pretty damn expensive. i am wanting some sort of forced induction...running nitrous on a stock motor with 64k on it, what is considered a safe shot to run? I favor the nitrous express wet kits...what sort of stuff are there to look out for..timing, etc... i am used to honda's, etc..so this is all new to me here working on vettes. -Casey

Check the "Digitalcorvettes" forum.Grumpy has a good right up there on nitrous. After you get done going over everything and doing a tune up then getting to know the car then it is time to start thinking mods.Do not rush unless you are already familiar with the LT1.Get the Helm Factory Service Manual it will save you lotsa $$$$$$$.Keep reading here and check the induction forum here.
