I'm sure to sound like an idiot for asking , but what's the difference between the two? I see many short blocks for sale all the time but I assumed our corvette LT1's were the same block.
It's the same Gen II block, the difference between short and long blocks are the accessories that come with the package. It's like having basic cable and having the delux gold package (comes with most everything) TV cable service in your home.
With the short block you don't get heads or any accessories just the block and rotating assembly, with the long block you don't have a turnkey motor but you do get heads with that package...
Other members may chime in and better define the package availability associated with each block.
Traditionally, the short block is without heads. Just the crank, rods and pistons and of course the block. Long blocks are the short block plus the heads, and most of the time, ready for the intake and installation of the accessory items like alternator, etc. Most of us here on the forum would rather buy a short block and use our own heads (maybe worked) and pick our own cam. There are lots of choices out there for different short blocks, ie, strokers, bored, or just OEM. My advice is to stay away from rebuilt short blocks or long blocks like you might buy from the auto stores.
