Default Headers/TPIS?

Anybody got a better recommendation than $850.00 TPIS (ceramic)set? My TPIS Headers are cracked in two places at weld....where they have been welded before. Shop wants to put new pair on...says the 4 year old TPIS are just wore out. They have to have O2 sensors in collectors.

Stainless works makes a good set, but they are pricey also. Other then that all I can think of is Headman and Hooker.

Wow that sucks; did you have them welded or did you get them used from someone??

I have always liked the TPIS headers with those built-in standoffs but not if they wear out in 4yrs!!

See the link in my sig or the sticky at the top of the C4 parts F/S section. Stainless steel headers are bullet-proof.

I just don't understand why headers for an LT1 Corvette are double to triple the cost of LT1 F-body headers. Paying $800+ for headers is ridiculous. And have you seen what the C5 guys pay for headers??!!! Unbelievable.

I just bought car and know mechanic that welded them. He said it would just be better to replace them because he said headers just wear out like that. What do you think? Have them taken off and welded better? If so what would be fair price for this?

I also went and spoke to guy that ordered the TPIS. Car was raced for 3-4 years.

Any header is going to run into metal fatigue given enough time, but if you want it to last longer, it needs to be sent off to JetHot for a ceramic coating, AFTER anything is welded.

Do you think I should give it another welding and then have it coated (jethot), or start over with new set. New set over 1000k with install..etc. How much is fair price for uninstall/jethot/reinstall?

Get a quote on the welding labor charge and one from Jet Hot (I think they will run $150-$200).

The labor charge to pull the old headers and install either new or referbed old headers is the same.

Then you can make the decision on the best path.

I have a set of 8yr old ceramic cloated Edelbrock headers on my '86 IROC and the only issue is rust out at the Y pipe, so I would think the TPIS LTs should last a lot longer than 4yrs if properly welded and coated.

JetHot quoted me $280+about $20 shipping to have my TPiS headers recoated. Just the headers and not the front Y.

You cannot weld through those coatings, so any welding has to be done first. If the metal is getting bad over alot of the surface, they may just try to sell you some headers outright, if they cant be repaired, you may want to call them.

Redbullapril23 coats headers inside and out for $188 (i believe). Which is a little cheaper alternative to Jet Hot.

If you try a search alot of forum members are happy with his work. I got a pair of Hedmans Coated from him- they are nice.

Simple law of supply and demand. There are probably 10 times more headers sold for F bodies. I agree though, the C5 folks are really getting gouged.

Dont mean to hijack but this thread got me thinking...

Does anyone know if TPIS sells their y-pipe by itself?

Do any other y-pipes fit TPIS headers? ie a Hooker y-pipe

TIA

Yes, very possible, but you have to either register your car to a middle of nowhere county that doesn't require biennial smog inspections, or do the exhaust swap to stock every two years.
