I had similar problems and solved them by booting the laptop in the "Safe Mode".
My laptop is an older Compaq 700MHz running Windows Me with Craig Moates' program ver. 8.51. It works fine on my 1990. I also used it on an 1989 without problems.
Many of the the OBD I diagnostic programs were written for DOS and may have trouble with some verisons of Windows, particularly the XP version.
You may also want to look at AKM Cables website which has an excellent tutorial on troubleshooting connections.

Finally, there is a neat little freeware program used to check the connection called "ALDL Interface Test Program" that used to be available at:

Jerry: We are crossing paths. I had to edit my reply a couple of times to get it right!
There is a work around if you are using XP. Use a boot disk for Windows 95 and the machine will boot in a compatible version of DOS.
Let me know what you do. I am not far from you and maybe some "hands on" might help.

well 1 more test failed this what i did - Do not plug the diagnostic end in to the car yet. So,
with the converter plugged in to only the laptop, hit a few alphabet keys.
Do you see typing? If yes, then the converter is working. If no, then your
converter may need to be plugged in to the cigarette lighter of the car for
power.
{DOES NOT WORK]

Hi Guys,
Windows XP has a 'compatibility mode' that allows programs to run in an emulated version of earlier versions of windows. (95,98/ME,NT,2000).
If you RIGHT click on the selected program desktop icon, then LEFT click on properties, it brings a box menu up. select the 'COMPATIBILITY' flag and there is a tick box. Check the box and a compatibility drop down 'child panel' menu apears with the older windows versions listed. Select your designed version and LEFT click on apply, to run that program in an emulated older version of windows.
Now I am telling you this not because I have tried it with any data logging software, because I haven't, but I haven't seen anybody mention it on here before.
The boot disc method someone mentioned will I think only work if you have installed XP 'on top' of an older version of windows. However, I am definitely not a computor WIZ by any stretch of the imagination, I get by (sometimes only just). I just thought the above might work with guys having problems. However, I know there are many programs designed for older versions of windows that will not work in the emulated compatibility mode. Some will, some won't. Maybe worth a try though.

I was told that in order to get XP to work with an ALDL cable you have to use a serial to USB adapter with it. I havent confirmed that to be true yet but I will know tomorrow morning when I hook mine up.

ALDL Cable
It isn't so much XP you need to worry about. Problem is most new laptops dont have a real serial port on them. Using those USB to serial adapters is very iffy at best. If your laptop does indeed have have a 9 pin serial port, by all means use it, and avoid those USB Converters if you can. the issue here is that when you use a real serial port, you can use pin 4 off the serial port to power-up the transistor used to transmit the data to the laptop. Using the USB Converter wont do it, So you have to power up the transistor externally through a 10k resistor by grabbing some power off the cig lighter or some other source of 12 volts. Making a cable is no biggie..A transistor, couple of resistors, and a 9 pin D connector. It will all fit inside the shell of the 9 pin when its done. I run mine on Win 95 on an old Toshibe 75mhz laptop. Works awesome, and I'm using only the serial port to run everything without going to external 12V.

ALDL Power
Not seeing the cable you bought its hard for me to say. But I will tell you that the 12V has to go to the collector of the transistor through a 10k resistor. Check Pin 4 of your serial connector on your laptop or whatever computer you are using. I.E put a voltmeter on Pin 4(+) and the - on pin 5. See if you have about 5-6 volts there. If you do then you could put a 10k resistor from Pin 4 to the collector of the transistor. Some cables already have this setup, But again I dont know what you have there, I made my cable according to the diagram on the ALDL.com page. Heres the link: http://winaldl.joby.se/aldlcable.htm. Look at the second diagram Thats how I did mine. Works Swell, If anyone knows where to get the connector that connects to the ALDL Connector in the car that would be great. Otherwise you just stick the wires in the holes. If you can take the 9 pin connector apart on the cable you bought then perhaps I can tell you more.It only takes me like 5 mins to make a cable, and I know mine works. If I can help let me know.
