Default gas mileage

Hey guys, well ive been a vette owner for about a week now. My 92 6spd has 64k on it and im considering doing some maintenance. I am just wondering what kind of gas mileage to expect. I am going through 40 miles per qtr tank.....sometimes 50..is that about right? Let me know! -Casey

You can expect anywhere from 12mpg, city, open loop, to a high of 26mpg, highway, closed loop.

you need to run an entire tank and then do the math. Mainly, because if you are depending on the accuracy of the gas gauge, you better keep a phone near by and your AAA membership upto date. They are notorious for being inaccurate.

I get 14 to 17 miles to a gallon and I drive 7 miles to shop and 7 miles back.

When the reserve comes on sometimes you have 3 gallons left, but don't trust it.
If you want to run your car on empty all the time be prepaired to buy a new fuel pump and fuel filter on a regular bassis.

With good maint. expect to get 16 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Good luck and welcome aboard.

I'm averaging 22 mpg and I drive on the interstate on the way to work daily. Round trip daily is 43.6 miles on the nose. I've also noticed different brands of gasoline affect my mileage.

For instance, Thornton's gas yields the highest average MPG, while Shell V-Power yields the lowest average MPG, but the best kick in the pants feel per buck!

We need more info, record the mileage and amount of fuel at every fuel stop (yes, you'll look and feel like a dork), that way you can track the engine and see problems if they present themselves.

With autocrossing I average about 20 mpg.

My '87 auto gets 24 to a little over 25. Don't do much driving around town. Mostly 60 mile round trips to work. You can't ever go by how fast a gauge drops. It might drop from full to 1/4 tank in 100 miles, then hang there for the next 200. Or stay on full for 200, then drop like a rock till it gets to 1/4, then hang there again for a while. The only way to know for sure what you're getting is with a pencil and paper.

I've got a '92 in the same mileage range as yours. I keep close tabs on my gas mileage.

http://www.wku.edu/~nathan.plemons/calc.xls

When the car was stock it would get 16-18 in town.

Now with all my mods it gets in the 13-16 range.

Highway mileage was actually largely unaffected.

My 86' auto (I believe it has the 2.59 rear) is stock except for LT headers and a single high flow cat.

I get 17MPG around town, and 28-29MPG on the highway cruising 63-70MPH.

I live near the coast (i.e. no hills).

Welcome to the Forum and congrats on your new '92 Vette.

On flat interstate my '88 with 2.59 gears gets 30-31mpg; the average is in the low 20s.

If you are going through 1/4 tank in 40-50 miles (i.e. 10-12 mpg) your LT1 needs a tune up or your right foot is VERY heavy.

Depends on which "quarter" of the tank he's using. If he filled it up to the top then this is most certainly true, you've got a problem. If according to the gauge it was the bottom "quarter" of the tank it's amazing that you got 40 miles out of it.

If you pay attention to the gas gauge on your car you'll notice that the bars get bigger as they go up. Although this is annoying as hell it is actually somewhat of a fair representation. On a normal tank of gas I get around 250 miles. The first 100 miles will go by before the first bar drops off, for all the others I get the remaining 150

It's just one of those little quirks that makes a Corvette special. FYI it depends on what gear you're in, how the car is running etc, but if you notice that at 1/3 - 1/4 tank the car sputters when you hammer on it, it's normal. The fuel actually sloshes away from the pump and causes problems when the fuel level is low. I've heard some people have trouble going around turns. I've never had this issue myself but it is a possibility. I took a tight off ramp at high speed once when I was on fumes and I was able to watch my fuel pressure gauge fall significantly. Since I didn't have my foot on the throttle though I never felt it.

If you're going to record and track the mileage, using a 3 tank average is best. Fill-up levels, driving routes, etc, affect the mileage reads.
