Default max wheel and tire sizes

im looking into getting a set of racing tires for all the autocrossing i do and im wondering what the maximum size tire i can fit under the car would be? the car is a 1995, 6 spd, base suspension. im planning on getting either gs or zr1 wheels (17x11 all around). i know 315 35 17s in the front work but do those need the gs offset of the zr1 offset? for the rear ive heard conflicting info on whether 335 35 17s rub or not. anyone have some info on this? id like to try to get those sizes but more importantly i dont want to have to cut the fenders apart or anything like that. thanks in advance.

I have a 91 and 17x11 wheels with the GS offset do not fit in front, at least not under the fender. They stick out by about an inch or so (was not under load since the wheels had no tires). I took some measurements and an 17x11 wheel will be really crowded. Most likely the rubber will touch the control arm and still barely stick out past the fender.

I posed a similar question and this definately answered it. (thanks again Chaos).

i used to run 315's on the front with a centerline 17 x 11 wheel with no problems. i had the car lowered and the tires stuck out of the fenderwells about 1/2 " max and just barely cleared the frame in full turn, but no rubbing issues.

GS offset will not work...

Neither will the ZR1.

But a 17 x 11 will fit fine under the front. You'll only barely touch at full lock on the sway bar.

I run 18 x 11's on mine at the track with 11.5" & 12" Goodyear slicks and they clear fine.

will a 335 work in the back on a gs or zr1 17x11? also for the rubbing issues on the front, can those be solved by spacers (more clearance needed in the wheel well) or is it issues with the fender lip? thanks again.

The 335 will only fit if you have a ZR1 with the wide-body and the right offset. The front is really a non-issue. You are not at full lock very often, so I just listen for the sound and back off a bit.

I can't get mine any further out without hitting the lip on the fender. Spacers would only make it worse.

ok so what im getting from this is that 17x11 is possible in the front but not with gs or zr1 offsets. im a little confused about this because when i was at vir, a couple of the c4s (including my instructor's) were running what they claimed (and looked) to be stock gs or zr1 wheels with 315s all around and they said they had no problems. im not sure if this is because of stiffer suspensions or not caring about increasing the turning radius or something like that.

sleazy rider, what offsets are you using on your 17x11s?

for the rear it sounds like 335s will rub but will 315s on a normally fendered car be definitely ok?

335's will stick out in back. I got CCW wheels made with as much offset as possible before the tire hits the trailing links. Now these are 12.5" wide; the tire would pull in a bit with narrower wheels.

good picture, thanks.

its sounding like there will be problems fitting 17x11s all around but what about z06 18x10.5 on all 4 corners? will the offsets on those work out ok? has anyone done it or know if it works?
