I just got off the phone with Jack from Precision Industries to order my Vigilante Torque Converter. The guy was really helpful in answering questions. He says it will take two days to make, and it should be to my house in a week. I don't come back to the states for another 3 weeks, so I won't be able to install for about a month. I hope I am pleased over my stock converter. I know alot of guys on here are using the Vigilante, and that is why I chose to put my money into it. I still have to order the cooler though. You guys using a Vigilante, what cooler are you using, and what size? I need one that will fit in my 86 without any problems. Also, should I get a big mouth for the front of car for more air flow, or is it not needed? Thanks. Wish me luck.
I'll be interested to see what size cooler peeps suggest...as for the Big Mouth, I would call and discuss this with Eric...you may not be able to mount the Big Mouth with a tranny cooler in front of your radiator...happened to a friend of mine...
I use the trans pan with the holes all the way through it, from Jegs.
700r4 and 4L60E trans are almost the same.
I pound on the 700R4 with no mercy and it holds up well ,drag mostly never had a problem.
I don't run a cooler other then the pan.
I do run a trans blacket and have to keep the holes clear,I like my feet the way they are.
What stall speed did they recommend ? Are you still running a TPI ?
Vic
After they asked the questions he told me it would be between 2800-3000 stall. I still have the TPI until february, then I am going to a miniram, AFR 195 comp heads, and a ZZ409 cam. Hopefully it all works out nice, and passes the sniff test too.
I run a 2600 Vigilante with a B&M Supercooler, 21k I believe.
Do you by chance have a electric fan in front of radiator? I was told the bigger coolers might not fit if I have a fan in front of my radiator. Anyone else have a problem with this? I am an 86. Thanks!
I ordered mine in April. They were pretty slow getting it to me. Was it worth the wait, yep.
Alvin from PCM told me to just hang it out and wait instead of going off on them. I'm glad I took his advice.

What size and stall speed did they hook you up with? You sound pretty happy with it. I can't wait to get mine.

9.5", single disc, 26-2800. I have a bigmouth, big tubes, ported plen, 219 & tfs heads on my car. When you are cruising around 30 mph and nail the gas it shoots very fast to 4 grand.
PI has really great facility just up the street from Memphis. I ordered my Vigilante from Finish Line Performance and picked it up at PI's shop. The free stall change came it handy when I went to the 396. Bumped it from 2800 to 3500.

Hmmm, so the more torque and/or C.I. you have, the higher the stall speed on any converter. Does that mean if someone had a close to stock one on, and suddenly changed C.I.s they'd have a higher stall automatically?
It's a lot more complicated than that. How you're going to use the car, the weight, where the engine makes power, gears, ..etc... The folks at PI can really help you decide on the stall that is best for your combination.
You should be able to mount the cooler w/o a problem. Even if you have to do a little fabbing, it's worth keeping the tranny cool over. Vigilante is an excellent piece, enjoy.
Its a pan with tubes running through it, it acts as a heat exchanger, as the car moves air goes through the tubes extracting the heat from the fluid on the inside of the pan. Go to summit or jags site and look at the online catologe.
