Default Wiper Crash!!

Has anyone had the problem of wiper arms hitting each other on a C4? My '93 arms appear to chatter across the windshield and at times hit each other. I've tried new wiper blades. I've also cleaned the windshield and use rainX to help them side. Is it possible my linkage is loose or the motor is starting to go bad and just doesn't have the power to side the wipers without chattering? Any ideas??

Thanks,

Jim

Lift your wipers up and wiggle the wiper back and forth.Too much play will cause this especially on the drivers side.I bought a new one for that side and even though the pass side needs replaced it no longer crashes. The hold down springs also get weak which would cause the chatter.

Default Wiper Crash

The tech topic mentioned is good I just finished doing it to my 88 for the same problem. Thats the good news, the bad news is that somewhere along the way someone treid to adjust out the problem and now I have to re-adjust the linkage to where it should be. I have all the Facotory books and they are silent about how this is done. Anyone know about that ? You may have to do that . The arms now cost 30 bucks each from GM. I got mine from GM Parts Obselete for half that. I also got the blades from PEP boys.---good luck

Yes people try to do the adjustment(it IS in the FSM)when the problem is worn out arms instead then it is really messed up when you get new ones.

Another "down and dirty" fix is to use a shorter arm on the drivers side. I think the later C4 blades are 20" so try a 19" blade (or whatever is an inch shorter than what you've got now. If your wiper arms are NOT worn out, you could try the adjustment (see subsequent post)...

I want to stress DO NOT do the adjustment until you are sure the arms are not worn out.

Thanks, Redeasy. That's good advice re checking first on whether the arm is worn out or not.

Been there done that Another thing that I found interesting in the process is how far the new arm has to be twisted up to fit onto the wiper stops. They are REALLY preloaded it seemed like the wiper arm was 3 in below the stops.Just lift it up over them and set it in place.

Default Wiper crash

Thanks for the follow up. My arms are new and it appeared someone tried to adjust it out with the old style arms.

Thanks Again.
