I got the stethescope out and found out the #8 piston/rod is knocking like a mother . Time to pull her out. . I have some really sh*tty luck. I haven't decided if i'm going to rebuild or go with something else yet...
How bad are the internals when you get a Knock? What can I expect when i pull this thing apart? The engine was shut off when the knock ocurred and was started up for a total of maybe 3 min to check Torque converter, flexplate, and engine.
Aslo, i'm going to get rid of my 180cc ported/polished Dart IE's. They have aobut $500 worth of work done to them. I dont want to get rid of the springs, but if you need them I may throw them in. They only have about 1500 miles on them. I paid $1350 for the work and heads. They are $1000 new assembled without any work done to them.
On the engine i had (in my sig) i pulled on a 400 hp C5 until 60 mph then he started creeping away (thanks to my 2.73 gears). Make a reasonable offer if you're interrested. I should have them off by this comming weekend with some pics. My email is scott.owen@***.net Thanks
Holy CRAP!!! I have those same pistons... the 10.5:1 ratio... thats not cool
I have the same pistons in 383 version. My engine builder will no longer use them. Had 1/2 dozen failures in a year and a half. Some were broken the same way, others just exploded and took out everything. I am not sleeping well with them in my car though.
What pistons should I use? I'm going forged for sure. Something that will give me around 10.5:1 C/R in a 350 with stock bore and 64cc aluminum heads. Mahle, SRP, Ross, Speed Pro, Weisco...? I know I was pushing 400 in my motor before based on how hard it pulled and how it performed agains my buddies 400+ hp C5. With a set up ported/polished Dart Pro1 215cc heads, forged pistons, 10.5:1 C/R, and every thing else the same in my sig what kind of numbers should I see? Thanks
Stock 1984-'85 pistons should get you close. They're 9.00:1 with 76 cc heads and they are forged. Those 215 cc heads are too big for street use on a 355.

RACE ON!!!
so should I go with 200cc heads then? I have 180cc right now. I don't think i'm getting enough flow with the heads i have now... chokes somewhat in the 5000+RPM range, thats why I'm thinkin 200cc or so. Oh, i have a stock bore block. Would the out of the box Dart pro 1 200cc's be too much? Guess i could always have another $500+ done to the heads i have now, i just wanted to go to aluminum heads instead of keeping the Iron.

Aluminum is good. I'd try to stay smaller than 200 ccs, though. Look at 185 to 195cc heads. I don't think your heads are the problem at 5000 rpms. I shift gears in my stock Crossfire at 6000. Maybe the heads you have are fine the way they are.
What would be the problem with having 200cc heads (i'm good with cams and every thing else, not heads.. lol)? What do you have on your car? Would it benifit me to get 185-195 aluminum non ported/polished heads or have more work done to the 180cc Dart Iron Eagle's i have now? I never had a detonation problem (engine would sputter some what every once and a while if hot and i shut it off... but that was it, no pinging).
