I contacted Precision Gear and they are several months away from making 3:73 gears for the Dana 36 chunk from my 84 with a 3:07 rear. Does anyone have a source for 3:73 gears for that carrier? Will a Dana 44 fit in place of that carrier and if so how much $ and what if any modifications? I have the Energy Suspension bushings waiting on the swap. Any help would be appreciated. I am running alot of HP, over 400, maybe over 500.

You can check with Jegs, Summit, Randy's, Drivetrain, and any other number of resellers to see what they carry. The Dana 44 complete differential will replace the current Dana 36. It is a bolt in. About all you will need for the conversion is the drive shaft and the "C" beam from a Dana 44 (stick) car.
I know richmond makes a set of 3.73's for it. I would SERIOUSLY consider swapping for a D44 though if you have 300+ and are going to go with 3.73's. I would cost anwyere from $1000-2000 depending on the quality and if it is a roter to roter setup. Exotic muscle has some stuff listed on their web page (kinda expensive though). You will also need a modified C-Beam if you have an automatic and make sure you go through ALL of the ujoints too.
If you're going to use 3:73 gears, then you can go with the Dana 44 now or after you 36 craps out. Here are some pics of my 36 w/3:54 (which has thicker teeth than the 3:73) Here's the Dana 44 w/3:73s from DTS...
