I own a 88 vette-----------I have an intermittent problem that happens about every 10th time or so that I start the car. Acts like it is out of gas----does start up and then shuts down (sounds like fuel starvation to me)-----crank it 3 or 4 times doing the same thing and then all of a sudden it starts up and runs fine. Runs fine after starting and does not quit while driving.
What I do know: is not tied to whether the car is hot or cold,
have good fuel pressure even when it's having a problem, have spark when it's having a problem, finally got a fault code last week for the first time but can't repeat it----faulted 34 & 54. Checked out the maf wiring and it looks fine. Sounds like the ECM is not getting or giving the signal for the fuel to flow???-----any ideas on what to check first??
Thanks for your help

Your comments don't add up. First, isn't code 54 the fuel pump? You say, "Sounds like the ECM is not getting or giving the signal for the fuel to flow", but you also say, "have good fuel pressure even when it's having a problem". Something as stated isn't true. Dig out your factory sevice manual and follow the trouble shooting charts for one code and then the next. You'll find the problem(s) without throwing wasted money at it.
thanks for your reply CFI------I do have the manual and of course since I can't duplicate the fault code------it basically refers you back to the troubleshooting intermittent failures. Thinking I will just assume the fault code does appear and trace down the suggestions it gives for checking wiring problems and testing circuits. Yes code 54 is the fuel pump circuit-------and fuel pump pressure is there and apparently the ECM is working correctly if I have pressure??????so why does it sound like only the primer is being burned???-----

I am not sure what, "sound like only the primer is being burned???" means. Although it is supposed to be a part of the process, the ECM is not needed for the fuel system, in the starting or running of the engine. *I* would be trouble shooting both of those codes, even if they aren't being currently displayed.
