I had some work done on my 85 to fixed a coolant leak. When I got it home I used a high pressure hose to wash down the engine to get rid of any residual coolant out of any nooks and crannies.
The next day the check engine light came on and the car idled like crap. Code turned out to be TPS voltage too high. I tried to adjust and couldn't get the volts to read right. Could I have done something washing the engine to break this sensor?
I've got a new one coming at the local parts shop, but I don't want to make that mistake again. I thought these were pretty stout?
I've heard where water can affect them. I've used engine cleaner and a hose to clean the engine. I try not to spray directly onto TPS sensor. High pressure isn't good for electrical. If you manually move the lever on the TPS sensor and your rpms don't change, it's probably bad now. I think the rpms will go up a little if you move the TPS lever while idling.
It is poss. to ruin it with water. It may dry out, but its easier to get water in it than get it out of it. Keep it for a while and test it later on, it may make a good spare someday.
