Default Clutch Problems. Need help.

I just bought the car recently and am not sure when the clutch was replaced if at all. The car has 97k. Well the clutch feels fine except for engaging somewhat high on the pedal but it has been slipping up top in the rpms. It grabs and does not slip at all down low. I doesn't start slipping till high in the rpm range and more signifcantly around the tops of 3rd and 4th. Around 5500-6300 the clutch starts slipping and the rpms float. I can faintly smell clutch when whinding out 4th. Does anyone know what the problem is? Maybe slave cylinder? I don't know too much about clutches.

I'm not positive, but that does seem like the classic case of a worn out clutch.

Check for oil leaks before you install a new clutch. Oil will shorten the life of a clutch.

I hope its just the clutch, I plan on replacing it soon, but I'd hate to spend the money on a new clutch and have the same problem.

So, It's possible that oil is leaking onto the clutch? Is this common?

My 86 did the exact same thing when my clutch went. The only difference is the 4+3 trans., but a clutch is a clutch. I just got mine back on the road today.

And oh yeah mine has exactly 97K on it. It had the original clutch in it.
Good Luck with yours

Just a sanity check... I remember reading a thread a while back from someone who stated the clutch on Vets letting out at the top of the pedal was good. The farther down it let out meant it was wearing.
I have 49K on my 90 and it let's out near the top of the pedal, but I have noticed no slipping. Just curious what's correct.

Put her on a lift and see if there is oil dripping from the bell housing. Our LT-X engines have a tendency to leak oil from the intake manifold if it is still the original. Also, oil can leak from the rear of the valve covers and work it's way down to the clutch area. Then there is always the rear main seal that doesn't really leak that often anymore thanks to the one piece design. I only had 44K on my 92 when my clutch started slipping. Yes, it was an oil leak that got to it; the rear of the intake manifold was the culprit.

Any recommendations on replacing the clutch? brand? Iv'e heard that the flywheel has to replaced when replacing the clutch. Just browsing around I was looking at the fidanza clutch kits with aluminum flywheels... but I can't justify $1000 on a flywheel alone. Any suggestions?

You should be able to find lots of information about this by doing a search. This has been discussed in just the past couple of days. The overwhelming consensus is to buy a stock replacement.

I've replaced the clutch twice in my 94 - once at 35k and now at 97k (funny how that keeps coming up) and have never touched the fly wheel. Seems fine to me. Maybe i'm just lucky.
