You have two questions, here. All one piece rear main seal, gen I, and Gen II, engines are externally balanced... in the rear. They are neutrally, or internally, balanced in front. The vibrations dampers of both series, although not interchangeable, are neutrally balanced. The flywheels or flex plates carry external balance weights and ARE interchangeable.

If you have to label the engines as one or the other, they are externally balanced. If you are just referring to, as the title of the thread, says, "86 - 96 350 balancer", the (harmonic) balancers are neutrally balanced.

If it is truly a 1987 "replacement" all your old parts, used, or new replacements, will work, fine.

I question this myself because the balancer on my '94 had holes for the same balancing weights that go in the flywheel and mine even had one or two already in it. Are those weights there to neutrally balance JUST the balancer or does it effect the balance of the engine? this is confusing

Do you take your tires to be "UNBALANCED"? Just because something has a balance weight attached doesn't mean that it was added to make it out of balance.

Not only that but look at the back there are holes drilled to balance it there too.It IS zero balanced but the GM ones are not very balanced when assembled till they do it.I bought a new one from Venture Products that was almost perfectly balanced from assembly all that was needed was one small hole in the back.OEM costs over $300 Venture's was $235
