is it wise to buy and install a slightly used cam and roller rockers? i want to get my hands on a LPE 219 and i occasionally see them for sale (used) in the parts forum. what could some problems associated with buying used be?
If it is a roller cam then there is no issue with running it (unless it is damaged!), oil it and slam it in, the rockers on a hydrualic cam never take the abuse that a solid roller will give em so there would be no issue there either. At most check to see if there are any bearings in the rocker bodies that are REALLY rough, some roughness is fine. If it is a flat tappet you would need to change to new lifters to run it, but I doubt you are talking about that so just in case!
For all the work that is involved with replacing a cam, I would never put in a used one. It's not the cam that costs, it's the time and labor. Do you feel lucky? If so, go for it.
one good rule of thumb to follow is that if the part moves, then replace it with new.....if its fixed (ie, doesn't move, like intake parts, etc.) then getting used is the way to go (saves $$, no risks)
