Still can't get the thing to work.
Datamaster says there must be a 10k ohm resistor between pins A and B and a jumper between M and E. Did anybody out there do this add-on or are they an integral part of the AKM cable? Better still, is this the reason why the USB adapter can't see the ECM? I have asked Matti three times and still have not received a reply. I wouldn't be upset if he told me to go to Hell but to ignore me gets under my skin.
Giving credit where it is due: Andrew gave me an answer this afternoon. Now I have a direction.

how did you get in contact with them i have sent 5 emails with no reply
thanks
I just hooked up my cable and it worked out of the box no resistors where needed. I have also built a few cables and never had a problem with any of them, The AKM cable I have has all of the needed resistors in the cable. I think your problem is probably USB related, Andrew does get busy but he has always gotenback to me in two or three days via e-mail
For a MAF car you need a 10k ohm resistor across pins A & B of the ALDL. The serial data is transmitted on pin E or M, depending on the year. Does your cable have a male ALDL plug on it? If so, the jumper between E & M is so that no matter which pin the cable has wired for serial data it will be able to get to it.
jerry 89. He did not respond to my first two but did the third. Who knows why. He told me the jumper is standard issue and is in all his cables. Told me how to check for the 10k ohm resistor. It lives at board location R3 and is there.
I agree that my problem is most likely in my PC settings. Andrew told me to check which Comport his adapter was on. I am running a laptop with USB only and do not see any Comports when I go into Device Manager. In the set up for Datamaster it tells me I am connected to ComPort 4. I was hoping that this thing,Datamaster, would act like FD2BLKs and run out of the box.
89C4 I don't know which version of Datamaster you used but the Beta whatever version I have is supposed to work for 86-89.
Do you have the latest version of TTS datamster? I see that they have a beta drop for working with the USB serial adapter with the EE bin file ,but that is only for the 94/95 ECM. Have you called TTS yet? they have always been very helpfull in the past when i had questions mabey they will be able to point you in the right direction.
I did a search and found an interesting bit of information. take a look at the link below and all the way at the bottom it has a note stating the software must support higher then com4.
"3Please note that Superior Cable Technology is not affiliated with the afformentioned companies, nor does it offer technical support for their software. (Must support higher than COM4)"
Must support higher than Com 4.
This may be the key. All I have been able to use up to now is Com 4. Tonighe a buddy steered me to the point that I got Com 6 open. I have not attempted to do a datalog but all the prelems look as they should. I hpoe so I grow weary of throwing time and effort at this thing, not to mention money, and getting nothing but crap.
The version I have is 32 3 4.17. This is the Beta version for 86-89. Version 12 could have been an earlier release. I'll look.
Nope: TTS Powersystems does not list a .12 version. The Beta section doesn't show Beta versions so I guess that doesn't mean much. Why not download .17 from scratch, and give it a try. You get 20 shots for free.
Someone sent me 851. Worked with it a bit with the same results as 852. Couldn't get it to talk to the ECM. Thats when I ordered Datamaster.
That might have been me. I'm thinking you have a something in the BIOS that is preventing the link up. I had someone send me their laptop that they couldn't get to communicate with the ECM and after playing with some BIOS settings I had it talking like a parrot.
What brand and speed of laptop? What operating system?
Correct, you sent it to me. The laptop is a HP 5430 with an Athlon 64 processor. It came with XP Home.
Buddy showed me how to open Com 6. Last night I did that selection and got a link to the ECM. I got a window that said the ECM was an unknown type for some reason. On a hunch I started the car and got several minutes of data. Not sure what it all means but at least I can take the pulse of this beast now. The first thing I noticed is long tube headers and O2 sensors shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence. Took forever for the O2 sensor to come on line and when rpm fell off to idle the ECM wanted to go back into open loop. Guess anheated O2 sensor will be the first order of business.
I still would like to get 851 to run. Think I will take that of after I get more comfortable with Datamaster.
Thanks for all the help and guidance guys.

Glad you got it working.
ECM 851 runs in DOS. Try using a DOS boot disk to get it running.
To show off my lack of computer skills: when all my computers boot they ask me if I want to boot in XP or DOS with XP being default. If I tell one to boot in DOS will that work without booting with a disk?

Yes, if the computer has DOS on it, it should work.
