Default Going for more HP

I am considering having another motor built that will give me 400+ hp.
I have an 89 6sp, Z51 package.
My car is in great shape with most everything new.
My question is what am I looking at as far as computer, sensors, will I be able to use my TPI setup? I want this car to remain a Highway cruiser.
It is not a daily driver.
I tried Scan & Tune section with no response!
Thanks!

Stock shortblock in good shape. Do heads, cam, intake, headers and you will see 400+ hp in a short block below 6,000 rpms.

Sensors will not be an issue, but tuning will. So, you will need a custom chip burned to suit your heads/cam/intake changes.

Run searches in the archives for shorty headers, heads, and the Superram and Miniram. They should also contain rec's on cam choices.

In california, there is no legal longtube header, and the Superram is the only intake with CARB numbers.

Living on the Left Coast you will be severely restricted by CARB to a single exhaust system. The problem here is that your 400+hp motor will need 900cfm of exhaust flow and there is no single cat to do that. On top of that you cannot use LT headers to augment power development. You could have a custom exhaust installed with dual bullet cats in place of the stock pre cats and weld a 3" tube inside the stock cat to pass the visuals and the 3" pipe will flow over 800cfm.

With those restricitons, building a 383 or 396 would be the way to go. Then you might be able to use a modified TPI setup.

there's a guy on this board with a 406 A4 car running big mouth base, large tube runners, with a ported plenum. all factory emissions equipment in place running 11.8's. at 118 mph. thats about 380-400 rwhp and a good bit over 400 chp. sorry i can't remember the guys name. i met him at the track one day last year and asked me if i had the freak L98 car...lol

so a decent size cammed 350 with supporting mods or a stroker to put you over the 400 chp and especially the 400 rwhp mark.

nitrous is alot cheaper if your short block is in good shape and is always another avenue to go especially in california.

It can be done with ease of using the stock ECM. I have tuned cars that have been modified and have reached 9s with the stock ECM.

The stock ECM is very capable of handling bigtime power.

The MAF you have now I have running on cars running as low as 10.2@133+ MPH on large 434 ci motors. He recently drove the car to Corvette's of carlisle and it got over 20MPG!

The ECMs are not the issue, its putting together a good solid combo that WILL perform that is the hard part. With that said, its best to find a combo like 85vet's that we did and copy it to a T. His 383 SR combo last year, went 11.2 and was a perfect street cruiser.

Another great street/strip combo is corvette0096s combo. It also a 383 with great power and street manners.

lots of them out there if you need any help locating these guys email me and I can point you to them or introduce you to them.
