Default Adding Hot Cam to an LT4

When adding the Hot Cam to an LT4, do you just need to add the cam or is it necessary to buy the Hot Cam Kit. I was under the impression that the LT4 has all the parts included in the kit already so the cam alone is all you need. Would somebody pls educate me on this?

Thx

Yes, you can install a Hot Cam in an LT4 without buying the entire kit. The LT4 already has the LT4 springs and roller rockers. Only difference is the stock LT4's rockers are non-adjustable, and may be a bit noisy.

Kwik_Silver just installed a Hot Cam in his LT4, maybe he'll chime in.

The cam alone will work fine, but many take the opportunity to upgrade other parts "while they're in there."

Such as...?

OK, let me lay my dilemma out there. I really need some help here...

I bought my car a little over a year ago. I was told that it had a cam ( I assumed Hotcam) and I could visually tell that it had the BBK 52mm TB. The car runs scary good and has a slight lope to the idle. Following this forum and related posts, I found that my car showed all the signs of the Hotcam in a non re-tuned car such as: SES Light (PO300 Random Misfire), funky idle w/ a/c on, rich running condition etc... After driving it for a year this way I sent the PCM to pcmforless.com for a tune. I gave him a list of mods incl. Hot Cam. I got my PCM back a few weeks ago and although the car runs fine, I had an instantaneous SES that basically never goes out. It is the PO300 & PO? (both of which are O2-fronts- sensors). You can immediately smell that the car is running rich but other than the smell and the SES light you'd never know there was a problem cuz the car runs fine. I don't know what the hell to do now. Does it have the cam or not or which one or what? I'm confused BIG TIME! If it were re-tuned for the Hotcam and didn't have it, what would I expect. It seems to run too well for the tune to be that off BUT I don't know! How the hell do I ell what is actually in the car? I can either send my PCM back for a re-tune to stock BUT that tune wasn't obviously right for this car OR I can just spend the money and put the Hotcam in (although it may already be in there- BAFFLING!) knowing that the end result is what I'd want and the car is tuned for the Hotcam anyway. I would have thought that if I did not have the Hotcam and tuned the car for it, the tune would be so far off that the car wouldn't run or at least not run as well as it does...I need some opinions on this PLSSSSSSS!

Can a performance shop a la Exotic Muscle (Trevor) be able to tell me whether the cam ( or a cam?) is in there or not? Let's get past the fact that I'm an idiot who should have KNOWN the history of this car/motor when I bought it. What to do now? I don't have a problem w/ putting the cam in it BUT I need to know beforehand whether she's been opened up or not already. Any way I can figure this out? Otherwise I think I'm just gonna add the Hotcam (regardless) and call it good! I mean the car is already tuned for it...

HELP!

Thx,
Jeff

I would suggest getting a dyno tune, and see what #'s it produces. We could give you an idea if it produces hot cam #s or not, and it should fix your codes and 'gas smell' if it is running too rich. This is assuming that your 02 sensors are not shot from the car running too rich for too long. Since you are lucky enough to live near Exotic Muscle, your first stop should be there.

Since you (or anybody else) don't know what cam is in there the best thing to do is get the car tuned on the dyno.

I would say a trip to see Trevor wouldn't be a bad idea, either. He knows his shiz...

My impression is that you need to inspect this car completely to determine what it has and does not have........any chance you can contact the previous owner???

Does it have cats???? Does it have O2 sensors????

Put it on a scanner to check operation of the O2 sensors.....

Going on a dyno is ok, but you still won't know for sure what cam or other mods it has, seems like you would be better trying measure lift at the rocker arm...does it even have stock rockers anymore????

Lots of questions to answer......only way I see is lots of detailed inspections..

UPDATE: Just got off the phone w/ Trevor and he's gonna take a look at her. Coincidentally, he lives right by me so I'm gonna swing by his place tomorrow. He says we can get this thing figured out one way or another. Sounds like a great guy. Damn, I'm lucky to live in the same town as Bill B. the ZFDoc (who's a friend/my mechanic & coincidentally a friend of Trevor's) & Trevor/Exotic Muscle! It won't be tough for him to talk me into a set of those EM Longtubes...

Thx for the quick replies!

Gotta love this site!

I'll keep ya' posted on what I/we find out.

With your mods and if you have a Hot Cam you should be around 330HP at the wheels. Put those EM headers on and 345 to 350HP at the wheels thats well over 400HP at the crank.
