Well I blew out my rear end and deceided to go up in gears to 3.73. Well I seem to have some problems with putting in the new one. Since the old one was much smaller the 4 holes on the bottom of the new differential (2 on left side and 2 on right) which you mount up are to small. This problem is pretty simple since I think I can just drill them out and just put bigger bolts on it. Was wondering tho by doing this am I taking a chance of blowing out my rear again, is there any risk involved. Also, another problem was that the main gear (ring gear) that attaches to the cover is to big is there any ways around this or do i have to send it back to the comapny I bought it form to replace it with a different one.
I haven't been inside a dana 36 or 44 off these cars but I'm pretty familiar with dana rears. For one, the ring gear bolts to the differential so I'm not sure what you're saying when you say it bolts to the cover. Also, are you replacing the whole rear ( center section, diff, gears, bearings as one unit or what. Maybe some pictures would help?
My first guess is that there is a carrier break at 3.73, but I can't be sure because I can't picture what you're saying.
I bought a rear (carrier & batwing) for my 90 off of a forum member and the unit was for an earlier year then my car. This unit had the 3:07 gears in it as mine had 2:59s. So I started bolting up the Case to the Batwing and didn't know that the holes are smaller on the earlier case for the Strut Rods than my original case. I thought everything was going well till I looked underneath and saw the ears where the bolts went through were snapped off I asked a friend if they could be welded back on? He said that since I bracket race it don't even try just use my old carrier and swap everything over. Wish I would have known that before I started bolting it up. LIVE AND LEARN Pipe
