Have a leak on the "manual shaft" on my automatic. This is the shaft connected to the shifter that mechanically shifts the trans from park to reverse to neutral, etc.
Nothing about it in the Helm books (at least what I could determine). Has anybody had any experience with this item? I'd prefer to do it myself instead of the dealer if at all possible. Any advice?
Drop pan. Pull spacer clip on shaft. Remove 13 mm nut inside, on end of shaft. Slide shaft out of case. Pry out seal. Reinstall shaft and tap the seal in last. I believe a 9/16 socket makes the perfect driver. Be sure seal is even or slightly below edge of case.
Outstanding! Sounds like you just did this last week! Yes, I'll take the part number...I've had instances where the Parts Guy looks up the wrong item.
Space it pretty tight down there. Is there room between the case and the (stock) exhaust to slide out the shaft? I'm on the floor of my shop with the car on jack stands (oh how I wish I had a lift!!).
I honestly do not know if there is enough room to do it under the car. I change them on the bench. This seal is often NOT replaced during a rebuild in order to spped up the job. I change them every time. The shaft # is 24210712 it includes the seal.
Pete: Your part number checks out with my Dealer, but they say it may take either a short shaft or a long shaft. My vin on their system shows either. 24210712 is the seal with the short shaft, ...0711 is with the long shaft (128 mm long; no dimension given for the short).
I can't help but think with the way things are packed into that engine compartment, the best application is the short shaft as you originally specified.
I can always pull out the shaft that's in there for a match, but I'd like to get your thoughts before my hands get dirty. It's a mess to clean tranny fluid off my desk and keyboard!
Thanks for the info. I should be able to eyeball the difference between the short & long with the pan off. When the temps cool off down here (hopefully next week), I'll take a look and let you know how it turns out.
