imchanging the suspension in my 1992 and i was wondering what ind of shocks were best. i heard konis were good and so were bilsteins and kybs. i want good handling better then stock but not too harsh of a ride. whatdo you recommend. also looking at sway bars what companys are good and what size for front nd rear and whatabout bushing kits?
I installed KYB`s in my `96lt4 and i`m very pleased with the results.
My stock POS Bilsteins went out at 39M and leaked really bad.
Go with KYB`S.
Did the same with my '93. They are fine around town and in a straight line. But once you try taking some high-speed curves, they are pretty worthless. The rear end will float like a boat. It's one of those cases where you get what you pay for. I'm going back to Bilsteins.
If you want to boost cornering flatness install a set of ES poly graphite sway bar bushings front & rear. It's sort of a pita but worth it; very little effect on ride comfort.
i just replaced the rear stock shocks with QA1's. in doing so, the old shocks with the sensor wire had to be removed. now the shock malfunction indicator comes on and i cannot go more than 80MPH. what can i do about this?
You get what you pay for with shocks. I'm upgrading the suspension on my standard suspension 93. Went to 30mm front bar, 26mm rear bar with poly bushings. Added DRM rear camber bracket and VBP rear adjustable camber struts. Also added poly trailing arm bushings and poly rear spring pads. Lowered rear so car sits level. Added new Bilstein Z51 shocks. Frankly they are not very good. The shock mounting bushing rubber is so soft as to negate the effect of the shock on initial turn in. The car is too slow to respond. The quality is not very good either. The front shock covers do not sit parallel with the shock shaft and have already rubbed off the paint on the shock body. Next time I'll go back to to Koni sports. I've always had good results with them.
I have 71,000 miles on the bilsteins that came with my 86(Z51) and they are still working on the corners just as well as when new, just put kyb's on the 4x4 and it now corners as well as my neighbors firebird!!!!.....joe
