I have an '84 with a worn stearing wheel and I am too cheap to buy a new one. Does anyone know of a kit that you can buy with parts and instructions to remove the existing stearing wheel wrapping and install a new one?
I had the same issue on my '87 - the top of the steering wheel was beat to hell from the sun and my grubby hands.
I bought a leather cover kit (complete with leather thread and sewing needle) from Eckler's, if I remember correctly.
This kit was designed to cover the existing steering wheel "wrapping" (if you can still call it that at this point ) It slipped right over the steering wheel, and the needle and thread is used to sew up about 1000 holes along the seam. If you sew it up tight, it looks pretty clean. It's just a little thicker now.

I did this for mine and it looks and drives great.
