Default Emergency Brake not working

The emergency break on my 90 is not working. When I pull up on the e-brake the brake actually works and stops the car. But the handle of the e-brake will not stay in the up position. So once I let the handle go the e-brake releases tension and no brakes are applied.

Anybody know what is going on here?

There is a rachet that should hold the brake after the handle has been lowered.

Do you just pull up the handle with out holding the button?

I have done it both ways

Attempted to put the e-brake into action while pulling up on the handle while holding down the button and

I have done it with out holding down the button while pulling up.

The e-brake will not stay on. The handle just keeps going to the down position and the brake releases.

Sounds like the ratchet(pawl?) is not holding. Is this a new problem/ or did it crop up after a brake job or some other repair? I don't see any dissassembly proceedures for the handle in the Helms! However, if you shoot me an email I will send you scans of the parking brake chapter!

Phantom90, Aboatguy might be dead-on. If you had any rear brake work done, part of the procedure is to put a pin/nail/something in a hole of the e-brake handle mechanism (behind the cover) to 'disable' the rachet-catch mechanism. So you might need to remove the 'pin' by removing the cover and then the pin (all it does is just hold-back the rachet-catch latch).

If you haven't had any brake work done, then either the ratchet-catch spring is broken, or something dropped down into the mechanism and is holding the ratchet-catch-latch away from the gear is engages.

Hope this helps.

OK great so all I need to do is take off the cover and see what the condition of the rachet and rachet spring is in.

i have not had the brakes serviced since I got it in June. So this problem has existed for as long as I have owned the car. Just getting around to fixing acouple things on the weekends.

Thank you for the help, and expect an email from me if I can not locate the problem when I take a look at it this weekend.

Nope not yet I spent all available time friday night and saturday morning (before th Notre Dame game) replacing the driverside power window motor and both outer window seals.
I will try and get to it in the next day or so and I will post back with results, right now I have two tests tomorrow so needless to say I will be busy ALL night.
Thanks for the concern and help.

Well I finally got to look at the emergency brake and I am pretty disappointed.
It seems somebody has tampered with the e-brake before and there seems to be parts missing. (of course I have never seen an operational e-brake, so I have nothing to compare it to)

There is no rachet. The e-brake handle is not touching anything. The brake cable is attached and does engage as long as I pull back on it and keep pulling. It is just not catching on anything.

Does anybody have a pic or diagram of what the assembly should look like? It would really help me out. I have searched the manual but can not find anything.

The only good news is that I finally fixed my headlight woes, by taking them apart again and replacing the bushings once again.

The bushings I got from home depot were smashed and are no longer round they now look like half circles. I wish I could find my digital camera I would take some pics. So to be safe order from Ecklers.

The spring is missing that holds a small piece of tin against the teeth .I will try to find some pics.
I don't think picks will help much the spring is a night mare to install right.
