I have a 85 L98 and I'm planning to put a newer 165 computer in soon but until then i need a new MAF, before i buy one i wanted to make sure it will work with the newer computer. So i went to my local auto parts store and i was given diferrent part #'s, the thing that confuses me is the # for an 85 and an 86 iron were the same and the #'s for an 85 and 86 aluminum were different so that means in 86 there were two MAF sensors one for iron head cars and one for alumunum head cars. Here's the kicker my 85 was built late in 85 and has the one piece rear main seal block and aluminum heads but still the 870 computer so what MAF do i need?
Just get the 85 MAF. The 870 ECM used a MAF with a "pulsed" MAF signal and the later ones were a steady DC voltage. The pulsed signal MAF works exceptionally well with the 165 ECM...sometimes better than the MAF made for the 165.
I am currently running an 85 MAF with a 165 ECM, no problems.
Don't worry about that difference, its still basically the same.
The relays are different though, 86 has 2 relays on the firewall behind the battery, and 85 has one larger burnoff module stuck in the passenger dash, thats the difference I would be concerned with.
