Default Wierd Turning Problem

Hi All, love the site, i purchased a nice 84 vet a month ago that came from LA (im in Australia) and i gotta say that i love it! I have had some *** mobiles like 300zx etc, but nothing comes close to a nice corvette!

Just to let you all know, its preety stock bar chip, exhaust, 4 pt cage, body skirts and front spoiler, updated rear end from the newer c4's and some very sexy koni coil-overs front and rear.

Anyway, finally got some time to take it for a real spin and it has a really bad problem.... on hard left hand corners (i think right is un effected...) it will just die, like it is running out of fuel. The tank has plenty in it though! It has been suggested to me that it could be an impact switch?? but i think that if it was it would cut out, not burble to a stop. I got the vet off a guy who had it in his garage for about 3-4yrs, had a service on engine and auto tranny. My thoughts are maybe damaged fuel pickup? (do they have one or two in the tank???) or maybe even a blocked fuel filter??

Sorry it is so long winded, but i am just pumped to find a real helpful and cool corvette site. Cheers.

Joe.

This sounds like the common fuel pump problem on Vette's. Most of em do it when tank is around the quater mark or lower. I installed a new high volume pump in my 86 and problem went away, same solution for my dad's 90. Haven't noticed it on later (LT1) models though?

If the fuel pick is being uncovered while making a sharp turn, more pressure won't help. It might pay to check that the pump hasn't broken lose and is moving around inside the tank, otherwise, the cure is to to keep the tank full.

Thanks People, so i dont have to pull my car apart blindly, does the pump sit in the tank and draw from the tank straight to the Fuel pump body??? or is there a plastic/metal pick-up tube??

Am i not the only one that has suffered this problem?
Cheers

My logic was the same as what you are saying. I don't know why the high volume pump worked, i just know it did. It wasn't a fancy one either, it was just the one ecklers sells in it's catalogue.

Replacing the fuel pump and the sock/strainer with a 255lph unit also fixed that for me.
The old pumps sock/strainer was in poor shape when it was removed.
The pump is in the tank. Its one of the easier things to change. You remove it through the fuel door area.

I don't think you need a high flow /volume pump. The stock one works just fine on these cars unless you have some monster motor that requires excessive amounts of fuel. The stock pump works fine . You need to remove the fuel pump and replace it with a new one with a new sock filter. It is not a difficullt fix, probably one of the easier jobs to do on this car. Just examine everything carefully on the old one to see if there is a bad check valve or bad pick up or something like that. I think there is a how to proceedure in the tips section under the tools header on this forum. Just browsing that section is an education in and of it'self.
I have a mostly stock 86 that doesnt care which way you turn it or how fast. It just loves to go!!!

thanks guys, i went to the mid america website and found some good stuff, will try the others. I will look for the procedure on the forum.

And your right, browsing forums is a great way to learn about what mods work and what dont. I am especially interested in the cross-fire injection boring, and any real performane gains. i cannot get onto the other site dedicated to this.

AusJoe, you might want to try Racetronix if you are considering a new pump, you will find them on the forum as a supporting vendor. They sell a fuel pump package with gaskets, filter sock, ...the lot, for a good price and their service was second to none, when I bought mine from them a couple of months ago. No problems shipping overseas and no fancy shipping mark-ups or corvette taxes either. Mine is an 87tpi though and not an 84 crossfire. I know C/Fires run different fuel pressures, so you will have to check with them.

Joe,
There used to be another Forum that dealt just with crossfire injection cars, although I can't locate it. I came across it by accident one day, and it had a lot of good info on it, not just induction stuff. When my old computer crashed, I lost a lot of info and that address too.
Maybe another CF member can advise of the address, assuming it is still around!
There is plenty of other info around, I found this quite easily:-
