my tranny pan bolts were loose when I changed the fluid back in Feb., all but one were loose or just snug. I started smelling tranny fluid a couple of days ago and so I went and checked the bolts and all but 3 were loose or barely snug.
Anybody else have this problem with auto's?
Safety wire comes to mind. You can drill the bolt heads yourself with a good drill press or cheat and buy one of those neat jigs to use. Snug them down and wire them together and they'll never come loose again.
I do this with any bolts that I don't want to worry about them coming loose and particularly when doing into aluminum.
If you decide to use a lock washer, I would recommend using one of the star type available at any good hardware store, because of the relatively low torque on these bolts.
I had the same problem with mine Randy when BH Chevy did the flush and replaced the filter/gasket. I took it back three times and got under there myself and retorqued them several more times. It irked me because it was never like that before and this was probably the first time it's been opened up since the factory.
The last time I took it to them, it appears like they put some thread lock on the bolts as they got something on the pan in a couple areas near the bolts. But whatever they did, it stopped that loosening up. It looks kind of brownish in color.
If your not doing anything to it until after Friday, I have to take mine in early Fri morning to have my TPS installed and taught the new idle position. I'll ask then what they did to stop that and let you know afterwards.
All of the above suggestions are good ones. I have had this issue with just about ever Auto I have ever had the fluid changed in. Problem is that the gaskets are relatively soft so you cant torque down the bolts too much or you will pinch the gasket in two and/or distort the pan. This results in the bolts being suceptable to vibrating loose. I would try the star washers first as they work and are cheap and easy to use. However nothing looks as good as safetywired bolts if done properly. But then again , I am an old airplane builder/fanatic!!!
