I know this has probably been discussed "to death." But my '91 coupe with a stock engine runs hot in traffic. I was told I could buy a separate after-market temp sending unit, thread it into the block on the driver side, and run wiring that would allow me to use the new unit as the primary fan control (on at 200*, off at 185*). Further, by splicing into the existing wiring at the fans, and leaving the original unit in place, the original unit would act as a "back-up" if the new sending unit failed for some reason.
Has anyone done this on an L98? Mid America sells a sending unit with wiring kit, but it sounds like they intend for their unit to be a replacement for the stock unit, rather than be put on in addition to the stock unit. Anyone have experience with the Mid Am unit?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Haven't done it yet, looking to get it finished this weekend. I was going to use the Mid America kit as a replacement not use both. I'll check back after the install. I will tell you though, the plug you need to remove in the block, is a 5/16" pipe plug. It was just a pain to get, had to order from Snap On. Just thought you should know if you plan on going that route.
