Default 3" X-pipe placement ?

I am getting ready to take my '92 6 speed car to the muffler shop for a custom 3" exhaust and was wondering if I can place the X-pipe back a little between the seatbelt bolts that poke into the tunnel (for a better fit), or should I keep it as close the the headers as possible (for less resonance or more power?)? I am running a high revving 383 with close to 550 HP at the crank (TPIS headers, no cats, Magnaflow #12198 mufflers out back).

Bolt up some test pipes to the header collectors, apply some hi temp paint stripes down the pipes and run the enine till you see charing of some of the paint.

The "X" pipe should go in as close to the center of the chared area as possible. The purpose is to gain HP not reduce resonance.

You could also give a call to Random Teck and get their take on placement. I ordered a true dual header back (less mufflers) set-up, mine is a 3" to bullits then 21/2" out to x' pipe then back. That may not be for you in size but mine is a mild build 350 ci. Their tech staff are real nice guys and answer quest., They also offer custom (so I'm told) set-ups and I would think they have tested enough of these to give you some good starting point in meas. etc.
