I assume you mean a cheap, "not smart" battery charger. . .

Well Jim, you caught me there. My float chargers are indeed the inexpensive sort. Except for the motorhome, that is. It has a very good (i.e. "expensive") charger hooked to the coach batteries - but I still need to add water every month or so, or they'll boil out.

I just don't trust chargers that much.
I too have "been there" with the motorhome batteries. When you have banks of multiple house and chassis batteries, and they cost $1600 to replace, and they require charging "just so" to prevent failure, battery maintenance is a BIG deal (and one I will not likely undertake ever again).
Our "high tech" coach chassis batteries allowed maintenance via continuous "smart" charging, but it needed to be a $150 smart charger. (We had a converted Eagle bus with supercharged Detroit Diesel 2-stroke diesel. The bus loved to cruise at 80 mph.)

I have used one of the Guillotine type battery cut-off switch for many years now WITHOUT ANY problems. And, yes, NCRS encourages car owners to have a cut-off switch. The fire marshal in most areas will require one for any car in a car show inside of a building like a civic center where car shows are often held.
I happen to have an extra bronze cut-off switch which I can let you have to $25 shipped. This is a solid bronze switch with a Bakolite insulator. Its not a cheap Chinese import. Let me know if you are interested.
