Default (88) Brake Booster Valve

Greetings,

I've an 88, brakes are not what they should be as my
"foreign (gasp!)" car blows it away for braking, rotors checked and are fine, new stock pads all the way around, entire brake system flushed, replaced master cylinder, no vacuum leaks in/at brake booster or anywhere in car, abs self test appears ok...........,yet my brakes are not grabbing like the 4-cylinder car mentioned above.

was going to replace vacuum brake booster valve as routine maintenance but, noticed it is a bit hard to get out. i am afraid that if i bear done, i will damage the booster. so, how the heck do i get the brake booster vacuum check valve out?..twist?, pull at angle while twisting?.....ugh!.....thanks!

When you installed the new pads, did you

1) sand the roter surfaces (both sides) to remove the residue from the old pads? (use 130 to 180 grit paper and circular motion. Old residue can decrease the efficiency of new pads)

2) Properly bed in your new pads? Assuming you sanded off the old residue(if you didn't, you might want to do it) then you have to "bed in" the new pads. "bedding in" deposits some of the new pad material on the roters.

I like the Hawk brakes bedding in instructions

Do about ten stops from 35 mph to zero, keep rolling and allow about two minutes between stops...use moderate brake pressure (kind of glide to a stop), then do three hard stops from 50 to 55 mph. Get on the pedal hard.

Ride around for yen or fiften minutes and avoid using the brakes, let them cool down

Thereafter you should be fine

Back to your original question, to get the booster check valve out you have to pull really hard! (at least that's the case on my '87)

I was trying to remove mine to check it and didn't want to tear it up! Someone on the forum said to yank on it really hard, so I did! I also rocked it back and forth and twisted it while pulling. It finally popped out. Pops back in a lot easier!

***no i did not. i wiped them down after a good cleaning***

***again, an embarrassed "no". i never had to do that on any previous vette or other car i owned and felt this was same***

Be sure you pump the brakes a few times to release any residual vacuum!!
