Default Header Checklist

for starters - this is for my '85, with the stock iron head L98 (i.e. oval exhaust port). I tried a search, but most of the info I found was for the later aluminum heads with Dports (113's I believe they are?).

I was hoping someone could give me some suggestions about what parts to use and where to get them at, for my headers. (LT headers, ceremic coated in and out).

I've got copper gaskets, with a ridge at the exhaust port openings, but I'm not sure if they are the right style to be using. Any suggestions?

And what about the header bolts? Should I just reuse the stock ones? Any recommonded replacements?

Thanks for any input

Try calling Summit www.summitracing.com They have folks there that can answer these questions. I can't help other than saying that there are header bolts out there that have the ability to lock so your headers don't loosen up. There are also header bolts made for tight spaces so you can get at them easier.

I'm going to use Felpro 1406 gaskets, several people here used them with no problem on their iron-headed cars.

You will probably need some new bolts, not all of them, but some, so may as well get a new set. I'm probably going to buy a set myself.

I can recommend the 3/8 x 1" Stage 8 DDH (p/n 8911A).
These are plated 6pt caps screws with a 3/16 Allen
socket in the heads. They are also available in 12pt,
(no Allen socket) as well as in $tainless $teel.

I also bought ARP 3/8 x 1" 12pt SS (p/n 400-1210).
These are nice but I was only able to find 1". So
I used the Stg 8 as they offer a 2-pk of 3/8 x 1-1/4"
bolts and I expected to use these for the A/C & Alt brackets.

I think as long as the copper gaskets don't hang into
the ports, these should provide superior life and be
reusable. The FelPro 1406 (Brodix D-port application)
works for my L98. Whether it would seal properly on
your flange/port is not known.

Incidently, I'd suggest using a die grinder or round file
to lightly debur and laterally elongate each of the bolt
holes before installation. Might not be necessary, but
won't hurt either. If it saves having to pull them back
down or cross-threading something, this will be time
well spent.

I think what he means is non-D-port and of course, that is correct. Mikey, do the ridges on the gaskets mate up well to the shape of the header flange? If so, they should work well. The head surface has a larger flat surface and so that is not the critical part. If your headers have a 1/4" or even 5/16" flange, you can probably do fine w/ 3/4" length header bolts. If they're 3/8" flanges, 1" bolts would be better. I'd recommend bolts with a 5/16" allen heads on them. I have these in stainless and they're very easy to tighten. You may have to shorten the short end of an allen wrench to get to a couple on some headers. Most of mine I can get with a rachet drive allen socket. I have DRM headers, currently.

If you have the cash, install a mini starter while you have a chance. I did not, now I will have to pull the header next time the starter dies.
