Default New code 42 help

Tonite as I went to jump on the gas, the car bucked and bucked and then almost died out on me had I not kept the revs up a tad. When revs got low going around a corner it died. I started it up and it drove to my parking spot (it happened just before the driveway to work).

I put in the old paper clip and nothing came up. Hmm, ok. Later on I tried jumping on the gas and same thing happened, but this time it threw a code. Code 42.

I've had my ECM hanging down while playing around with chip configurations and I have a Moates "piggyback" adapter which allows me to put on flash programmable chips.

Anyone who has a piggyback unit knows that you can't fit the cover back on the ecm cuz the piggyback unit sits up like 1/8 inch or so. So, I had my Dad make me a plate that would cover the prom. SO, it's the same dimensions as the original plate just with a 1/4 " raise in teh middle. Looks excellent and fit on great. Now, on the cover of the stock plate, there's a foam kind of insulation or whatever it is. Now, on the new fabbed up plate there is nothing.

Is there a way that my chip made contact with the plate top and somehow shorted it out? My friend was also in the car and his foot may have hit the ecm but I don't think it did. Why did my car throw a Code 42?

Make sure the chip is all the way in. Also make sure there is not any play by lightly wiggling it around. If there is, that is probably the reason you threw a Code 42, meaning you have a problem with the Electronic Spark Timing. Check for any other loose wire connections near the distributer

I've had the chip in for over a week and no problems. Even raced it a time or two. This just happened somewhat out of the blue. I wasn't near the distributor at all and it only seemed to do it at WOT.

I'd say recheck your timing. You seemed to have jump some time. Maybe you should try to see if your distributer is still on tight and that base timing is still where you set it. Clear the codes by disconnecting the battery and try and see if you get that code again.

Even if the base timing is off, that won't cause a code 42 to set. Your factory service manual tells you what conditions cause code 42. Some people post because they like to see their words in print. No matter if they make no sense.
