A tip from Gordon
One of the mods that Gordon Killebrew recommends is to drill a couple of drain holes in the rubber boot that surrounds your gas cap. There is a factory drain there that prevents water from being sucked into your fuel system. I too never drive in the rain but got caught in a nasty unexpected storm this summer. Gordon says that the factory drain is too small and clogs easily. If you look close you can see the 2 holes I drilled in the corners at the low point of the boot. There is nothing under there so the drill won't damage anything. Any water that gets in that area gets drained outside.
Well, one reason "not" to drill holes there is because water will run straight down and into the spare tire carrier and collect there. I speak from experience. The tube connected to the factory drain routes the water to the ground so it doesn't collect elsewhere.
I am wondering why Gordon did not get it fixed while he worked for the general. It must be great to get paid to tell someone how to fix what you screwed up in the first place.

We had tons of rain last year, and my drain blocked... there was enough water to cover the gas cap!!!!!
Oh, Corvettes don't melt in the rain, just so you know...
I was headed to a car show and the crap on the roads really made a mess of the car. I parked next to Allstarcmndr's 87 vert. He won first place in his category but he had arrived the day before and his car was clean (but wet). I would like to think that my dirty pig would have stood a better chance if it had looked decent.

BTW danno85, if I don't carry a spare, this shouldn't be a problem, right?

Right. And if you don't drive in the rain it shouldn't be a problem.
I drive in the rain. I carry a spare tire and a jack and still run in the high 12's, and I like to take a long road trip occasionally. Everyone has different needs.

Design flaw that could have been corrected.. now with the 2 holes drilled water will run down the gas tank.. probably help rott it out. as moisture will collect under the cover. n/m I should goto bed... but NO ONE knows everything and noone should ever pretend to.
