Default 94 Tilt Column

This may have been covered, but how can I tighten up my steering column at the tilt?

Mine needed to be tightened up for Maryland inspection when I bought it. The process is complicated, but it was done in a short time by someone who knows GM tilt columns real well. That is who you should look for. From what I remember him saying, the column tilts on two pins in two removeable sleeve bearings. The bearings need to be peened to maked their inner diameter a little smaller. I do not know how he did it.

Anyway, it is still tight after three years and 12000 miles. Most importantly, he said don't use the steering wheel as a grab handle to get in an out of the Vette, and when you use the tilt lever, always hold onto the wheel with the other and gently guide it to the position that you want. Whatever you do, don't let it flip up all by itself to the stop. That damages the tilt bearings.

You have an air bag and many a lock smith have been done in by those.
The 3 screws have losened up inside the collum and when you remove the air bag and steering wheel you can see the screws not a big for someone that has the tools.
Log of the short is you don't have the tools and just to put the steering
wheel back on takes a special tool.
To remove the tilt wheel part takes another special tool,it's small and kentmore has it . I would recomend you take it to the butcher shop.

that sounds like the answer for my woes. i always thought it was the 3 screws but no matter how many times i tore it apart and tightened them and replaced the pins it still didnt help much.

anyone know someone that knows how to fix these??? im looking to pull mine out of the car very soon as soon as i can decide who can fix it.

Mine got fixed while in the car. You need to look around for a Corvette or GM high performance shop (most GM cars use the same column design) and ask if they do the job and for whom they did it.

I was lucky. One of my neighbors is Pat Goss, Corvette enthusiast and nationally recognized Motor Week personality. I took my new to me Vette to his commercial garage to get it inspected. It failed. I did a full brake job and they did the steering column. As I said, its still is tight, but I never use it to help me in and out of the car and always direct its tilt with my right hand, very gently. Now its a habit and the tilt will probably never get loose again until someone else owns it over my dead body.

I wish you success.

P.S. I thought about getting another whole column on ebay, but then decided that it might be loose too. So, as I said, I baby it. The column, not the accelerator pedal or the turning part of the steering wheel!
