Default Heavy equipment turbo identification?

Hey fella's. I'm starting to round up the parts to attempt a turbo project on my C4.

I sell Caterpillar Heavy Equipment parts for a living, and was wondering about using a CAT turbo for my project. The problem is that there are no identifying stamps on any of the housings. CAT identifies turbo's by CAT part number, and application, not by AR, turbine size, etc...

The only thing stamped on the housings are the CAT symbol, and the CAT part number.

Anyone know a way to cross reference the turbo's to conventional sizes, or determine AR and other vital characteristics by looking?

A typical CAT part number for a turbo is:

103-0655 for a new turbo and

0R-6726 for a remanufactured version of the same turbo.

Any help/thoughts/idea's?

If anyone could get this info, you'd think it would be the CAT parts man, but I have struck out.

I would find out who makes the parts for CAT and contract them for a compressor map or some kind of flow characteristics.

I know that the 3116 in a topkick has a Schwitzer OAX50 internally gated turbo. I found a map for it online long ago (before I went big single) Im sure if you look for it you can find it. Anywho, a pair would do well on a sbc

That's the kind of stuff I'm looking for.

How did you determine the brand and size of the turbo on the 3116?

Thats an easy one, get out some brake cleaner and clean the compressor housing. It will have OAX50 cast right into it. As far as wheel trims and what not, I don't know how many variations there were for sure. But the early 90's Topkick/Kodiaks with a manual and the 3116 have the turbo I was looking at. There's one in the driveway.
Search the web, my friend. Be persistent you'll come up with a chart! When I can't find anything, I call Rick Banas at dwdiesel. The are garrett's N.E. dealer and you can find their # on the turbobygarrett.com site. He's usually very busy so only call him as a last resort.

I would go with a nice gt45 or a T72 or T90 for big power.

not sure how well these big turbos will spool. sure the turbo
would work and be cheaper, but you might not like the
results.

a turbo project should go together with the right stuff!!

the bfreak knows his stuff and can make it work but check it
out first.

Yep, he's on point with this one. something as simple as a new a/r for the turbine (something common) for an earlier or later spool can end up being a nightmare. stick with the standard stuff and there is tons of parts availible.
