There are two seperate sending units at the back of the intake manifold on my '86 coupe. One is a cannister with a single prong electrical connection and the second is a smaller sending unit with two prongs. Which is the sending unit for the oil pressure guage? I'm down right now doing an engine swap, so I can't just fire it up and check.
tells the computer to activate the ignition when enough oil pressure is detected. The are prone to leaking through the ecectrical part of the unit and they will pour oil through the wire connections. To install the unit properly, you will have to get a special socket. THis is a must have part and it needs to function properly. Let us know how the motor swap goes.
The switch monitors the oil pressure in the engine. As long as there is sufficient oil pressure it supplies a power feed to your fuel pump that is independent of the fuel pump relay. If your fuel pump relay were to die while driving down the road, this switch would keep you running.
If you ever turn your key to 'on' and do not hear the fuel pump prime, but you CAN start the car with some extended cranking (buildng oil pressure) then it is a good idea to test your FP relay.
One other thing, its not a safety switch, if your pressure drops to zero, it will not send a kill signal to the ignition.
Well yeah sorta kinda pretty much.... it will though kill power to the fuel pump, but that doesn't matter since the fuel pump relay will still be powering it.
