This is my second c4 but my first 6-speed. The drive line seems to be loud, nothing that sounds like a problem..just loud. Is this typical of a 6-speed? I have some sound dampener on order to help.

Mine's a 93 A4. There seems to be a "whirring" sound most audible on deceleration between 67-57 mph. Changed out the rear end lube... teh old stuff didn't look too bad. Put new stuff in there (with the additive) and the noise is still there. I was told taht any gears that are at 90 degrees will make some noise (think that what they said). Some of what you're hearing may just be part of teh beast. Any drivability issues?
I agree that most of what I am hearing is just typical of the car. There are no issues with the car, just a loud drivetrain. This is my first 6-speed just wanted to make sure.

Our 94 was loud too, especially through/around the shifter.
Found out some previous owner's 'mechanic' did not replace the shifter's lower boot nor its upper boot (the leather boot was there thankfully).
Symptom was Shifter was 'sticky' and stiff, and noise and heat from/around the shifter/console/cup holder.
Once I replaced both boots, noise level dropped significantly.
So, If the noise is mostly around the shifter, maybe your has has tranny work and/or a shifter change/removal and one or both boots are missing too.
P.S. there is a 'whine' in 6th which is traditional of the ZF. Also consider a tranny fluid change and consider using the BMW oil (see zfdoc.com) instead of GM's -- should be done every 12-15K anyway.
My '92 6-spd tranny sounds like a bag of old bolts at idle. Dip the clutch and it quietens down significantly. apparently it's normal - and the noise disappears is not obvious when cruising.
