Default Drag Radial Question...

I run Nitto DR's at the drag strip (full time actually)...315-35-17's...I recently upped my stall to 3200 and took a few runs on Friday night to see how the new converter hit...I could NOT hook...I dropped the pressure down to 24 lbs. but still spun...the best short times I had were a couple of 1.86's...

I have always run the highest pressure I could and still hook at launch...I never had to go below 27 lbs. before with the 2400 stall converter and always dead hooked...

My question is: Has anyone running Nitto DR's dropped below 24 lbs.?...if so, did you have any problems?...thanks..

p.s. ET Streets or MT's are not an option for me at this time...

No experience with Nitto's but my bfg drag radials like 17 psi. I have run them as low as 12 psi. 12 I do not recommend.

94 with Nitto 315-17"s 10 1/2 inch wheels.
I run 20 psi and burn the tires until it smokes the place up.
Run your hand across the center of the tire, feel to see if the center is level or concaved or bulging up.You need to have the center as flat as possiable.
Your breaks need to be new also or the tires will not burn even when power breaking.Don't hop the tires on a second burn out, just pull up to the lights as quick as you can, they cool down fast.
When I run nitrous I can get 1.63 60 foot out of them.
I have MT Streets on my other vett and they are much better than the Nittos.I run 1.54 60' on that tire with very little burn out.

Something in this range will be fine at the track for the Nittos, too.

Thanks guys...I'll try 22 lbs. next time out...I didn't want to get out of shape at the big end or break the bead...btw, I use a line lock for my burnouts and heat them up pretty good...

The m/t's are a softer compound, i run my goodyear eagles(33.5x17x16) at 5psi unless they are stingy with the vht, then i will go lower, yes they are screwed on. joe

Update....I just spoke with Nitto...they said I could drop all the way down to 16 lbs. but not below that...I'll be trying 22 next time out and go down from there if need be...

I don't care about trap speed since I bracket race the car in $$$ events...You can't dial for spin so dead hooks every time are vital to me...

Yes, the track was prepped well...I dead hooked there every run before...the 3200 stall apparently hit to hard for 24 lbs....

p.s. I don't think I will ever get in the 1.70's on the short times with the Nitto's...I only make 278 rwhp...stock motor, never been touched with 112,000 miles..

I run my BF Goodrich DR's at 14-15 lbs. No problems. I suspect the Nitto folks might have told you a bit high, just for their liability's sake.

A novice question, but are wider DR better, or can I stick with my stock 9.5" sawblades?

It depends on your power, if you can hook with a skinnier tire less mass to move.

Tire should not have at tread width more than 1" wider than the wheel. Your 9-1/2's are perfect for a 10" tire. The catalogs (Jegs, summit) tell you the mfgr's recommendations for wheel width for a given tire.

Who cares if you make 1.70s, if you are playing for cash then just being the most constent makes you the winner, and it always tics off those with more horse power. joe

You got that right, Joe...give me a dead nuts car and I'm a happy camper...I've put many 10-11 second cars on the trailer dialing mid 13's and you're right....they don't care for it...

I have Nitto drag radials 315/35/17 on 11" ZR1s and I drop it down to 16 pounds every time with no problem. On the street I keep it at 20 psi with no problem. It's not a daily driver.

You guys gave been a great help and I appreciate it...since I have to drive 79 miles each way to one track and 154 miles each way to another I'm stuck with the Nitto's right now....

If Wilma ever gets though here I can't wait to drop 'em down and see what happens...
