I have an 1988 C4 and while reassembling my front suspension I wanted to understand why it was designed the way it was. Mainly the caster that is built into the mounting of the upper control arm seems to place the top spindle mounting point (ball joint) to the rear of the bottom spindle mounting point. Is this call "Postive Caster"? If so how much caster should there be? I have all of th stock configured shims, should I use these or should I get rid of them, which would then affect camber as well? Are the shims the only way to adjust camber?

Castor also helps with steering feedback.
And it gives you dynamic camber (more camber when steering through corners), for more tire contact.
You can increase the castor by moving shims from the back to the front. This rotates the upper balljoint rearward. You'll need to recheck your camber of course.
