Default Serpentine Belt Position!!

Ihave a 93 LT1 with a ProCharger. I was always having a slipping belt problem and then my power steering started acting up and one place said it was the rack, another said it was the pump.
I spoke with Jeff at TurnOne and he told me a few things to check.
As I did so I noticed my power steering pump would stop turning when the wheel was turned all the way.
I also discovered the power steering pump pulley has grooves like the belt but the smooth side of the belt rode on the pulley not the grooved side. What the hell is up with that I thought.
So I tried arranging the belt so the grooved side went on the pulley and in that case there was way too much slack.
Then I noticed the diagram for the belt and according to that it was right with the smooth side on the power steering pump ????

Anyway I kept trying things and discovered I could run the belt on the far side of the idler pulley instead of on the inside like the diagram shows. It was a bitch to get on but it doesn't squeel when I have the A/c on and I gained two pouds of boost plus my power steering is working again!! I now get about 7 instead of 5 pounds of boost.
Anyone out there see a problem with this?
Also, why does the smooth side ride on the grooved Power steering pump Pulley?? Unless there is a belt with both sides grooved.
Thanks
Herb

92 LT1's were a one off belt that was grooved on both sides. Might wanna check into that.

you need to find out what length belt that is and find someone who makes the same length belt with a double sided groove or you will end up destroying your belt with the new found tension you have..

aside from that pretty cool about the boost.. are you sure everything is turning the proper direction now?

Yeah, 92's had the double sided belt, maybe you have an early model 93 that used the same setup. On my 92, i took all the grooves off the pulleys that run on the outside of the belt, and just got a slightly smaller belt. This has worked 100% for me, and saved me all the PITA work of trying to find a double sided belt

My '93 has the double sided belt as well, they are expensive though.

If its working for you now I'd leave it.

You will not find a 95" double sided belt for the the supercharger. When I have my superchaeger on my 93. ATI supply a 95" long single sided rib belt. The power steering pulley which have groove in them and will ride on the the flat side of the belt. I call ATI about this. They say well that is how they ride on. I left the groove pulley alone. You certainly can change it to a flat ride pulley.
