I have a stock 91 basic 350 with 72,000 miles. I want to pep it up a little with out braking the wallet. I put the airfoil intake you can get for $30 and that left me wanting more . So what is the next step a performance chip? suggestion on what deliever the most performance for the money? thanks darren

With a stock engine dont waste your money!!! Dont buy no more of those HP add ons you see in the catalogs. They just dont deliver on a stock engine. If you really want to see or feel some gains, try adding headers anda good exhaust system.Thats ALL.Your airfoil didnt do a damn thing either.Until you do internal engine mods,it wont make much difference.

Good luck!

You starting on a very very dark path! Have a plan of what you want out of the car and ask from there. I will tell from experience, that tuning the MAP system is more difficult than the MAF systems.

For the feel of go, get a catback exhuast. Outwardly, you will feel like you have done a very good thing. Engine wise you will have very little for your car.

Do the filter and ignition mods as well. (K&N or amsoil) (always MSD)

once you start on this path, you can't return!

And, let me add, that taking the dark path will lead to the "dark side," and all the wonders of modified travel. LOL.

Read the tech tips section about bogus HP mods. There is no source of cheap HP. You do things as combinations to get improvements.

On the "cheap" (a few $100) side:
-remove the frisbee from the water pump pulley
-install a low temp (160 or 180deg) T-stat & fan switch
-cut the air filter lid and install a K&N filter
-cut back the electrodes on the stock AC Delco spark plugs
-install an AFPR to tune fuel flow at WOT

Instead of doing a commercial chip, wait till you need to do some tuning and have one of the Forum Gurus burn you a chip.

For a "little more" (>$1k) try:
-exhaust mods: FL headers, dual exhaust with bullet cats and hi-flow mufflers

For a more agressive street feel address the A4:
-install a 2,000-2,400 RPM TC
-install a TransGo shift kit

For more beef you need to develope a plan as to what kind of power curve you want and then chose heads, cam and intake to meet those requirements.

Take the airfoil out and toss it in the trash. Dont ever buy anything in those magazines that says it gives HP, other than exhaust systems its almost always a lie.

Best bet would be to start with exhaust, just pick a set based on sound preference, they all give about the same power. If you dont mind it loud, then go for Hooker or TPiS headers and replace the main cat with a better high-flow unit. (read the thread on the main page)

The L98 is intake restricted as well, so intake replacement would be the best bet.

All of this will get horribly expensive, so you need to start running searches in the archives. Do your research on everything there first before asking questions, people are just going to say the same things that are already in there.

Go ahead and ask away. I have waded through the archives and never really found what I was looking for! If you want direct answers to direct questions PM me. I raced the tuned port stuff on many different engines over the course of a few years so I will shoot you strait on what will and will not work for you.
