Default Headlight Issue...Please Help!!!

Hey Guys I have a 1996 LT4....I turned on my headlights going to work this morning and they rolled on out just fine and I drove to work. When I got here and parked and turned them off....the passenger side goes down like normal but the drivers side did nothing. Light turns off but nothing moved. I opened my hood and turned the lights on and off to see whats going on. There has never been a grinding sound so I dont think the motor was going bad. The drivers side light that isnt work is still making a sound like its working....just not catching something. The top of it too is plastic and spins around and around like crazy still. What the heck is going on and even if my motor is messed up how do I put the light down???....You know having one light sticking up all the time just isnt pretty.

I would be willing to bet its the bushings that have gone bad. I just replaced mine this weekend. It wasn't too bad of a job and I bought the bushings at a local hardware store. You can also get the bushings from Mid America and I imagine Eckler's has them as well.

You can do a search on the forum for Headlight and you will get a ton of info on the subject.

Here is a link for a good How-to LINK

Yeah I figured it would be a bushing and since im doing the whole thing I might just throw in the copper gears too. But how the heck do I turn my light down until then so I dont have a one eyed pirate driving down the road?

Did you try spinning the manual actuator ****?

No...I have no clue where it is....any pointers on how to find it and which way once I find it to spin it.

Look on the underside of the hood for a knurled **** at the end of the actuator motor, alongside of each headlight assembly. IIRC, there's a directional arrow to indicate which way to turn it. You may be able to get it down with this.

If you have your owner's manual, it should tell you what you need to know about this.

Be well,

If it isn't the bushings, I would think the next thing to check would be the headlight motor control module -- mounted in the wheel well forward of the left front wheel.
That control module has one input from the headlight switch and two outputs -- one output to each headlight motor. So, one side can go bad without affecting the other.

It's your bushings. If you're hearing a noise like THUNKA-THUNKA-THUNKA-THUNKA-THUNK! and observe violent movement from the headlight motor assembly itself, your OEM Delrin bushings have turned to powder.

Get them from Home Depot or aftermarket. And search the TechTips here or at Corvette Fever online for the instructions.
Not too bad a job at all for a sunny weekend.

Its not the bushing....its the metal bar that runs through...the piece the pushing sit on. The little teeth there are worn. What is this piece called so I can get a new one?
