Default Bose...Snap, Crackle, Pop

I've researched both the tech forum and the audio forum and couldn't find the exact symptoms I having on my 86 Convertible Bose.

Whenever I start the car I get a steady "crackling" through the speakers.....with or without the volume being up.....until approximately 5 minutes down the road. Then is seems to go away until the next time I start up to go again. It's not very loud, just annoying. My Coupe has had an after market system since the day I bought it....so I'm new to Bose. Being that the car is 20 years old is it just the system "warming up" or something else.

I'd like to keep the stock system but not if this continues....

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

RJVette23

A couple of questions, does the sound change pitch with the engine? probably not, if this static is only at sart-up or when the car is 'cold' it could be the amp in the speaker box is giving out, I would listen to each speaker and hopefully only one is doing it, and if this is the case it more than likely the amp. E-bay or send thim off to Bose for repair if you want to retain the factory system.

Very slight pitch change....I'll be checking each speaker more closely this weekend.

Thanks for the response and direction

With a bose system as old as yours, I can bet the amps AND the speaker drivers are done.

The cones are more then likely totally dryrotted. That is the sad reality.

You have some choices here...

1) Bose reconditions amps/speakers for a reasonable fee.

2) Go aftermarket.

Sounds like the capacitors in the amps are going out. It's a common Bose problem with this design.

Read here and here.
I'm sure there are other repair tips online, but this should get you started.
