Default Clutch / Tranny chatter

1993 6-spd

I have a strange chatter / vibration which appears to be coming from the clutch. Possibly the transmission.

When the car is idling in neutral there is chatter and vibration. Pushing in the clutch pedal stops is and everything is smooth.

Putting the car in gear and engaging the transmission has the same chatter. The clutch engages fine and the car drives around fine (although I just drove around the parking lot.

Basically, it's present whenever the clutch pedal is out, whether the car is in gear or not.

The whole clutch system (disc, PP, flywheel) is new and newly installed so it must be a problem with something being loose or not engaged...I think.

Suggestions?

It may be the bearing in the clutch plate.
When you depress the clutch pedal the bearing is pushed through the fork so the pressure is released and if the transmission shaft is a little misaligned some noise/ vibration could result.
Sometimes it is just a matter of time so parts get self aligned through natural wear .

Have you actually experienced this? I'm hoping it's something like that, but I'm hesitant to drive around much and risk damage to my $800 clutch or my $2000 transmission if it's not...

Any thought on what I might blow up if it's something worse?

You should specify for us what your clutch setup is, it is not stock if I recall.

If you are not using the DM flywheel(and if memory serves you're not), then noise is to be expected, search the archives.

The noises you describe are the reason I am keeping my DM & stock clutch. I have enough noise as it is, I don't need anymore.

If you do not have a stock clutch it will probably not apply to your case.
When I changed the clutch it was very damaged and the fork was almost loose.
I corrected all that, but kept the original flywheel that was resurfaced.
( By the way, GM does not recomend to resurface this kind of flywheel)
Anyway, I have read that if you use a single mass flywheel like the aluminum ones made by Fidanza, you could expect vibration.

Maybe you should start checking your setup for this kind of problems.

Give us more details. Did the noise just start, but was not there before? If you are using a single mass flywheel, some noise is too be expected as mentioned earlier. It does sound alittle like a throwout bearing. Good luck!

That was the part name I was looking for " throwout bearing".
It is sometimes difficult to remember the technical words when english is not your language as is my case!

By the way I understand that the bearing should have a little coat of lubricant ( high melt point grease ), just enough to lube it but not so much that it spills to the clutch plate.
And I have also read that it is a sealed bearing that does not need to be greased.
What is your opinion on this?

I have a 94 with the exact problem. The guy I bought the car from said it is common with the single mass flywheels. I did some research on it and found out this is true and harmless. I beleive at an idle, the engine shakes a we bit and the clutch vibartes a we bit and the throw-out fork vibates and chatters. Something like that.

You guys are absolutely right.

I have the Carolina Clutch stage III with aluminum flywheel.

I called Tom at the shop and he said exactly what you've all said.

Guess I have to live with it. Glad it's not a street car!

Thanks a million for the help!

I found this while surfing one day:

(Q) I own a 1990 Corvette with the 6 speed ZF. I have a transmission noise which many other Corvette & Camaro owners report as "normal". This noise is most prominent in neutral & 1st gear and is commonly described as the "rocks in a can" sound.
Duane Barcena of north Chicago.

(A) A single mass flywheel will produce a sound known as gear clatter while in neutral which is harmless to the transmission. The springs in the clutch disc, which are not present in the disc of a dual-mass set up, will oftentimes produce a rattle like resonance in the 1K - 2K RPM range when under moderate to heavy power load settings.
