Default New Engine in the Vette

Iv'e given serious thought to putting a new engine in my vette. It has a tired l-98 with 139,000 on it. A guy offerd me a ZZ3 untouched crate engine for 3,000. It has the carb on it and drstributer though. Im thinking of just buying one out of jegs/summit. Im gunna throw mw TPI on whatever i get. Will i need to do anything to my Computer? thats the part im not real sure about. Anything else is helpful.

For not too much $$$ you can get a brand new GMPP crate engine like the ZZ4;

Or the ZZ383

You may need a different base for your TPI intake, but either of these engines would be a nice alternative. As for your computer, you may need a new chip based on the cam and size of the engine, it would be a good idea to contact a tuner after you have made your mind up on what you'd like to do for more details.

Those are awfuly nice, but i was hoping to get one under $3,000. I'm finding it rather difficult to find a nice engine under that price that will support Tuned Port.

Why don't you have the original rebuilt from the ground up and make it a stroker while it's being done?

The ZZ4 has corvette heads your TPI will bolt right on. All the accessories and oil pan to. The only thing is it has 10:1 verses 9.2:1 compression and a hotter cam you will need to have a new chip burn for this. As for using the ZZ3 you can get a TPI intake that is made to fit crate motors with Vortec heads. Check out this link for the intake if you have any questions just email the parts person. They will get back with ya on your questions.https://www.paceparts.com/index.asp?...D&ProdID=73239
Hope this helps.

I put a similar ZZ4 in my car 4 years ago and love it. You will have to use a drill on the center middle intake bolts to get the TPI to directly bolt on. It is a different bolt angle I was told, or buy an Accell/LPE intake maifold like I did. Next, you will have to re-use your distributor. The water pump will have to be reused or buy a new one as the crate motors come with a different length water pump. Next you will have to grind some material off the back of the water pump and one of the timing bolts that is located at about 10:00. Different Timing cover and bolts on new blocks. The stock chip will run the ZZ motors and unless you are into racing, you will not notice that you need a $200-$500 custom chip. I also put the original smaller harmonic balancer on, because on poster 4 years ago told I had to, or dent the front suspension crossover bar. I have been told by others however that this was not neccessary. $3000 is a good price for a replacement new motor. You would have to spend an extra grand or more for that motor from even a GM discount house like PACE, especially when you consider shipping (ZZ4 350H.P. Turn Key Crate Engine Package PACE Price $5,039.95). The mods to the ZZ motor are quick and easy with a drill and a grinder. I added alot of extras to my motor change (see signature below). You might consider a new Torque convertor while your in there. Then there are the hoses, belts, gaskets, oils (tranny & motor) antifreeze. It all adds up. Before investing a ton of money in the car, consider the fact on what it is worth (trade in value). You might be putting more money in the car that it is even worth. Mine has sentimental value and wife would not let me buy another.
